Made before he had totally abandoned style, humour and plot and beautifully shot on 35mm film. It features some of the best actors and actresses from the period. This release of "Countess X" has been restored from the original negatives in HD-quality widescreen, making this the best possible version of the film.The piano heavy jazz score courtesy of Didier William Lepauw (Lips Of Blood and The Seduction Of Amy) is excellent.The Countess X is a must for fans of Jean Rollin and those that appreciate erotic films from the seventies. Released on a very nice-looking DVD from Njuta Films in Sweden. IMDB lists this film as a ADULT / COMEDY/ MYSTERY which tells me they believe there's more going on here than the many mindless porn videos that Rollin made during the 1970's & 80's. Also a check of the Njuta Films website shows that they are not a porn distribution house. They generally release collections by cult directors or films which have some unusual quality or exceptional merit worthy of this type of DVD restoration and attention. This is the only hardcore Rollin film they have included in their Jean Rollin Collection. It's not much of a secret that in order to keep working in between the arthouse/horror films that he obviously put far more of himself into, Jean Rollin made porno movies. Commercially viable at the time, these projects allowed him to make a living and his stamp is still evident throughout some of this work, a good example being 1976's Countess X. The movie begins when a masked thief roams around the forest outside a stately home. She heads in, tries to grab the jewelry but is interrupted. From here she sets into motion her master plan. She somehow learns that a group of very wealthy people will be gathering together at a huge old mansion out in the country for a day of drinking and debauchery. She decides that since none of the attendees know the true identity of the party's host, known only as Countess X, that she'll assume the host's identity, drug the champagne to distract the attendees, and make off with all of their jewelry. Eventually of course, the true Countess X (Karine Gambier), shows up. Rachel Mhas, who also worked on adult films Vibrations Sexualles, The Seduction Of Amy and The Night Of The Hunted for director Rollin, makes for an interesting lead here. When the men fail to collect any points, there follows a silly wanking routine to decide which one has first dibs on the women. Meanwhile Fellix's spouse Susi is bored, lonely and unable to fall asleep, so she calls her old friend Rosemary who now runs a private club and does not mind taking calls while servicing two men simultaneously.
