Going to the camp of Consul Calpurnius, he is appointed centurion and sent to Rome. Nero takes him at his good will and assigns him to look after the gladiatorial games. Cassiodorus and his assistant Sulpicinus of Velletri take advantage of the situation to rig the games, arrange bets, and prostitute the Vestals. Discovered, the two friends are sent back north where they make the acquaintance of Lugunga, Vindice's daughter, and clash with Zundice, the current leader of the Lycians, who is determined to avenge his brother's death. Cassiodorus finds himself forced to fight the new leader of the barbarians, whom he kills by accident. Back in Rome, he is appointed consul but cannot take advantage of his new position since Nero has burned Rome.
