VS) Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino (skeh-TEE-no) abandoned ship half an hour before hundreds of passengers were evacuated. This according to transcripts of a conversation he had with the coastguard published by an Italian newspaper. When asked how many passengers were still on board Schettino said there were only 40. The captain then ignored orders to return to the ship and help with rescue efforts. KC) The 52-year old captain now dubbed ëCaptain Cowardi and ëThe Most Hated Man in Italyi will appear before a judge on Tuesday. The ship ran aground during what was supposed to be a friendly salute to the people on the tiny island of Giglio (ZHEE-lee-oh). The 615 million dollar vessel should have been 4 miles out to sea but was instead just 300 yards from land when it crashed. Seven people have been found dead and twenty-nine others remain missing. 2. VS) According to doctors in Venezuela president Hugo Chavez (OO-go CHAH-vehs) probably wonit live to see 2013 due to his fight with cancer. In fact the polarizing leader may not even make it to his countryis presidential election this fall The claims contradict word from Chavez himself that heis completely cancer-free since undergoing surgery in Cuba.Side CloseKC) Medical sources close to Chavez say that his prognosis is as bad as it could possibly be. Chavez himself acknowledged on his TV and radio broadcast that he was still undergoing chemotherapy. Sources have apparently said that the Cuban surgery was botched and that the cancer has spread from his colon and prostate to his bones.3. VS) Elsewhere on the international scene a part of NATOis controversial missile defense system has gone live An early-warning radar station in Turkey is now operational. The station is being manned by both Turkish and US staff. Turkey is one of five countries who have agreed to participate along with Spain Poland Portugal and Romania.KC) Meanwhile Iran n which shares a border with Turkey n is objecting to the system. Another country voicing objections is Russia. They say they want a legally binding treaty that says NATOis system wouldnit be used as a deterrent against Russia.
