We_ll start off in Mexico, where results from the national election have lead to a series of protests. Although Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Enrique PeÒa Nieto became the presumed president-elect, his main opponent has so far refused to concede. Supporters of the Democratic Revolution Party_s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets, echoing his belief that the election had been, quote, plagued by irregularities. Their protests have included blockades and sit-ins throughout the country. This is in spite of the fact several exit polls found PeÒa Nieto to have clinched the presidency. Official results aren_t expected until Wednesday. The U.S. has deployed wide-scale military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. The move is a preemptive decision geared at deterring Iranian forces from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz HORE-mooz, which has become a hub of activity in recent months. With more on this story, let_s check in with guest anchor Laura. Eila, in addition to monitoring the Strait_s shipping routes, the US is increasing its number of fighter jets in the region, should the standoff over Iran_s nuclear program escalate. The US Navy is also beefing up its presence in Gulf waters, doubling the number of minesweepers in the area. This comes as the U.S. and its allies have begun strictly enforcing their embargo on Iranian oil exports. Speaking under condition of anonymity a US military official didn_t mince words, saying the message to Iran was Don_t even think about sending your boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We_ll put them on the bottom of the Gulf. That_s a pretty bold statement Eila. It is, but it seems like the US isn_t messing around this time. I guess we_ll see how Iran responds.Well, the ball is definitely in their court but if history is any indication, they won_t take that type of threat lightly. Let_s shift our gaze over to the eastern United States now, where record temperatures and violent storms have left millions of residents without power. Maryland, Washington DC, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all declared states of emergency, after hurricane-force winds lead to blackouts and extensive property damage. To make matters worse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed over two thousand record temperatures were either matched or broken since June 25th. Power companies have warned it may take several days before electricity is completely restored. And unfortunately, there doesn_t seem to be any end to the searing heat in the near future.
