Description:
I_m Victoria Sinclair and you_re inside the naked newsroom. Our top story today takes us to the shared border between Turkey and Syria, where tensions have reached a boiling point. Concerns over a possible chemical weapon attack has triggered a NATO intervention in the region. With more on the response from the global alliance, and what it could mean for the situation going forward, here_s Eila Adams. At the request of the Turkish government, Vic, NATO has given the green light for the deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries along the shared Turkish-Syrian border. The missiles are capable of traveling five times the speed of sound, and will be used in the event of a chemical attack. Despite reassurances from the Assad regime that the country_s chemical stockpile will not be used, the international community is wary. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the move is strictly precautionary, and the missiles will be deployed over the next few weeks. However the Russian and Iranian governments - both vocal backers of the Assad regime - are not happy with the NATO move. Iran says NATO is quote going down the road of aggression. Pretty ironic coming from them Vic.So should we expect to see a no-fly-zone established over Syria like we did in Libya, Eila? There are definitely concerns about that. But Rasmussen has been adamant that NATO has no plans for military involvement in Syria. He wants to see a political solution to the crisis.I can safely say that we all do. Thanks for the update, Eila.We_re not done with Syria just yet. Erica Stevens is here with details on a stern warning from the White House about the situation there, along with more of today_s headlines. Vic, US President Obama has made it clear that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime is quote totally unacceptable. Obama says the use of such weapons would cross a red line, and would have serious consequences. Iranian state television is touting the capture of yet another unmanned American drone. According to the report, the Revolutionary Guard captured the drone in Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf. The US Navy, however, denies it_s missing any aircraft in the Middle East.A new 10-year study on international terrorism has found that terror attacks have leveled out since 2007. The number of attacks had risen steadily between 2002 and 2007, due mainly to the war in Iraq. Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan accounted for the highest number of attacks, while countries in North America, Western Europe, and Latin America were deemed safest. And a nuclear company with ties to the Chinese government has been fined 3 million dollars after a guilty plea before a federal court in Washington. The company admitted to illegally shipping nuclear materials from the US to Pakistan without permission. The ruling marks the first time a Chinese firm has pleaded guilty in an American criminal export case. From the newsroom, I_m Erica Stevens.
