VS) Rick Perry is the latest candidate to withdraw from the race for the Republican nomination. When the Texas governor first announced his candidacy he shot to the top of the polls. But since then he_s been dogged by reports of erratic behavior controversial statements and poor performance in debates - including his infamous oops moment.RW) Mitt Romney made headlines with his 8-vote victory over Rick Santorum in the Iowa caucuses. But new results show that it was actually Santorum that may have won. Certified results show Santorum with a landslide win by comparison - 34 votes ahead of Romney Although results from 8 precincts are missing and will never be recovered so the true results may never be known.2. VS) In other news the blackout protests on the web Wednesday appear to have had an effect. Around 7000 websites including Wikipedia went dark to protest proposed anti-piracy legislation - known as SOPA and PIPA - that many claim would essentially legalize online censorship.RW) Several US lawmakers have now withdrawn their support for the proposed laws. Two key sponsors of PIPA in the US Senate Marco Rubio and Roy Blunt are among those who are now against the act. It_s believed that with their support behind the protests PIPA could have trouble passing in the Senate.3. VIC) And US President Barack Obama has rejected plans for a massive oil pipeline that would run from Western Canada all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico The 16-hundred mile Keystone XL pipeline is being delayed because there was not enough time to properly review the plans. The pipeline has also been a hot topic for environmental groups.RW) Republicans slammed the President for the delay claiming the decision could cost Americans thousands of jobs. House speaker John Boehner says Republicans in congress will continue to push for the pipeline.The exact number of American jobs that would be generated by the project is unclear. The oil industry puts the number as high as twenty-thousand. However independent studies have put the figure at a much lower six-thousand.VS) Sounds like this is a decision the President would rather make AFTER the election this fall. RW) Exactly but it_s one of the hot potato issues that_s not going away so we_ll have to see what happens. A news crew spotted someone who seemed to match the description of the suspect in the back of a police car near several of the blazes.VS) Since last Thursday 47 fires have been set n the worst spree since the 1992 LA Riots. Of those eight of them were set within an hour of authorities releasing the video. Officials say that in some cases the fires that were lit in parked cars spread to nearby buildings.2. KC) In Iowa leading Republican insiders say that Mitt Romney is the likeliest candidate to win Tuesdayis state caucuses. In a CNN poll a solid 63-percent of the 64 insiders predict Romney will resonate with the voters. Thatis much higher than his closest rival Ron Paul who 27-percent predict will win.VS) The other candidates all have less than one-percent predictions of victory with nobody at all thinking that Rick Santorum has a shot. However those numbers are simply a prediction. When asked about the percentage of the total vote each candidate will get Romney only has a slim lead over Paul n 24-to-22-percent.3. KC) Although it may be hard to believe US lawmakers were busy in 2011. Over 40-THOUSAND new laws were enacted last year with most of them taking effect on New Yearis Day. But some of them are pretty controversial. For example California will require schools to teach material on the contributions of noteworthy gay Americans.VS) Another California law will add gender identity and gender expressions to the things protected by equal rights. They_ve also banned the sale of expired baby food and formula.In Delaware and Hawaii same sex couples will be able to enter civil unions with equal rights as married couples. And that_s your first look at the news. Another exciting development taking place is that we_ll be simplifying our video format AND upgrading our daily program to a new higher quality and MUCH sharper video. We will also be gradually replacing the archives with the same higher quality video. Watch for that on January 16. Now let_s get down to business The Iranian government has once again issued a threat that could wreak havoc on global oil supplies. For more on this developing story we_ll bring in Katherine Curtis. What_s going on over there Kat?KC) Eila you may recall the Iranian military shut down the Strait of Hormuz for military testing recently.EA) Of course - something like 40 percent of the world_s oil passes through those waters.KC) Right. Well a US aircraft carrier left the region during those drills and Iran has made it very clear that it ISN_T welcome back. KC) After 10 days of military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz (HOR-mooz) Iranian General Ataollah Salehi (ah-taw-oh-LAW saw-leh-HEE) is warning against the return of a US Navy aircraft carrier that left the region_s waters when the drills began last week. Salehi says that Iran is not in the habit of warning more than once. However the general did not provide specific details as to the actions the country would take if the American carrier returns to the Persian Gulf. Iran has already threatened to shut down the Strait altogether so tensions in the region are high. We_ll turn our gaze to Europe now where France has added its voice to the chorus of disapproval over Iran_s nuclear program. They_re urging other EU countries to follow the US lead in freezing Iranian bank assets and embargoing oil exports. This follows strict sanctions set in place by the US Canada and the UK late last year after the International Atomic Energy Agency claimed Iran was carrying out tests to develop nuclear weapons. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe (AAH-LAA(N) ZHOO-PAY) says he has no doubt about their nuclear ambitions. Elsewhere Hungary is the latest European country to be hit with protests in recent days. Tens of thousands lined the streets in Budapest to protest a controversial new constitution that took effect this year. It was pushed through last spring by the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party after they won a two-thirds election. Opponents say the new rules will remove checks and balances which in turn could threaten the democratic laws set in after the fall of communism in 1989. The protesters aren_t alone Eila - the US and the EU are also asking for the constitution to be reworked.EA) So what are some of the changes that have people worked up?KC) Well there_s the rewriting of their electoral rules which some people think favors the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party. And there_s some social issues included like pro-life and anti-gay-marriage clauses that aren_t going over very well. EA) It sounds pretty contentious we_ll be sure to keep everyone updated on any new developments. We_ll check back with you later Kat. Now let_s get down to business The Iranian government has once again issued a threat that could wreak havoc on global oil supplies. For more on this developing story we_ll bring in Katherine Curtis. What_s going on over there Kat?KC) Eila you may recall the Iranian military shut down the Strait of Hormuz for military testing recently.EA) Of course - something like 40 percent of the world_s oil passes through those waters.KC) Right. Well a US aircraft carrier left the region during those drills and Iran has made it very clear that it ISN_T welcome back. KC) After 10 days of military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz (HOR-mooz) Iranian General Ataollah Salehi (ah-taw-oh-LAW saw-leh-HEE) is warning against the return of a US Navy aircraft carrier that left the region_s waters when the drills began last week. Salehi says that Iran is not in the habit of warning more than once. However the general did not provide specific details as to the actions the country would take if the American carrier returns to the Persian Gulf. Iran has already threatened to shut down the Strait altogether so tensions in the region are high. We_ll turn our gaze to Europe now where France has added its voice to the chorus of disapproval over Iran_s nuclear program. They_re urging other EU countries to follow the US lead in freezing Iranian bank assets and embargoing oil exports. This follows strict sanctions set in place by the US Canada and the UK late last year after the International Atomic Energy Agency claimed Iran was carrying out tests to develop nuclear weapons. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe (AAH-LAA(N) ZHOO-PAY) says he has no doubt about their nuclear ambitions. Elsewhere Hungary is the latest European country to be hit with protests in recent days. Tens of thousands lined the streets in Budapest to protest a controversial new constitution that took effect this year. It was pushed through last spring by the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party after they won a two-thirds election. Opponents say the new rules will remove checks and balances which in turn could threaten the democratic laws set in after the fall of communism in 1989. The protesters aren_t alone Eila - the US and the EU are also asking for the constitution to be reworked.EA) So what are some of the changes that have people worked up?KC) Well there_s the rewriting of their electoral rules which some people think favors the ruling Fidesz (FEE-dehs) party. And there_s some social issues included like pro-life and anti-gay-marriage clauses that aren_t going over very well.
