The Nurses / (Terry Sullivan (uncredited), Athena Films / SWV)

So THE NURSES was made for a tiny audience, hence on a low-budget. What is striking, however, is that it plays like a real film, albeit a very poor one. It does not resemble the hundreds of "1-day wonders" one sees in video reissues stemming from the 1970-71 early days of porn. Same team made a followup for Sherpix called YOUNG STARLETS, which I'm anxious to see, expecting pretty much more of the same.
I'm reviewing the DVD-R issue from Something Weird; more recently it has been revived on DVD in a "Naughty Nurses" double feature from After Hours Cinema.
Set in a hospital, film is a series of vignettes with very little carry-through storyline. While played straight (most of the cast can't act worth a lick, hired for other reasons), many scenes are conceived on the level of a burlesque sketch, as in the opener of a poor schmo ordered to deliver a semen specimen, and getting the pretty femme lab assistant in the next room to "help out".
Problem of course is that lack of talent, both behind and in front of the camera, results in unfunny episodes. Sure, you can see where the joke is intended, but only groans are possible. Some of the women are marginally good-looking, but none of the stunning beauties from the softcore era nor the striking good-lookers like Suzanne Fields and Rene Bond from the XXX days are present. The guys are strictly no-namers too, and unusually hairy (all-over), perhaps a turn-on for some fetishist but hardly what proved to be successful in porn.
Though made for slightly wider release than a storefront movie, THE NURSES is still technically crude, with the loud sound of the camera motor evident in many scenes. It is not very arousing either, as in one slo-mo ejaculation closeup that comes off as comical. Even the lesbian scene by one aggressive Head Nurse Flanders lacks the usually sensual overtones that were standard in such scenes during the softcore heyday.
A couple of kinky scenes left me cold. In one, a young nurse applies an enema to her patient, while simultaneously having intercourse with him. Another extended gynecological exam has all the demerits of the soon-to-be overdone "gynecological closeups" approach to porn, without any of the pluses. Both scenes come off as literally clinical.
Overall THE NURSES shows filmmakers fumbling around seeking a new art form, awaiting the arrival of auteurs like Gerard Damiano with his great cameraman Joao Fernandes to show them how it's done.

Thoroughly modern Mary-Magdelene (Furies sexuelles) / (Alain Payet, Luxe Video)

Most of the film is a flashback from failed suicide Marie-Madeleine's hospital bed.
Marie-Madeleine (Corrine Lemoine) is an assistant in a lingerie shop where the manager charges male customers to view the ladies' changing rooms through a two-way mirror. Another assistant, Mandarine, is not averse to putting on a lesbian show with female customers, but Marie-Madeleine objects strongly when a male customer tries it on with her. However, she later meets Richard Lemieuvre in a bar and has a one-night stand with him. She wakes up alone to find some bank notes on her dressing table.
One of her customers had been a prostitute and she later meets her in a café. She admits to having been glad of the money and her former customer introduces her to a madame. She is then drawn into the life of a prostitute, though she has feelings of guilt about this career, especially as she receives little respect from her clients. This culminates in her attendance at a sex party with Richard Lemieuvre who reveals that she is a prostitute and where she is then .
Hence she ends up with bandaged wrists in a hospital bed, but the words of her doctor seem to give her a more optimistic outlook.

An absolutely laughless, unerotic feature, Who Reamed Rosie Rabbit not only has no animation, but there's no connection whatsoever to Roger Rabbit, except for the fact that Victoria Paris is named Rosie Rabbit and she watches cartoons on TV. She doesn't even get "reamed"... a.k.a. anally penetrated.What this tepid sexvid consist of is Paris and Robert Bullock flipping through X-rated cable stations on the tube, pausing to watch a piece of each. What they see is what we get -- uninspired, mechanical, endlessly dull couch trips. Nice packaging but little inside.

This wild romp starts out as a pot-boiling thriller before turning into a full-fledged group sex spectacular. The first half of the film concerns hold-up man Jon Martin, who flees the scene of his crime -- only to end up hiding out at the house of the same cop who's chasing him! He makes the most of his time there, getting down and dirty with the cop's delectable young wife. Soon enough, the cop comes home and chases him out, and that's when the flick makes a quick left turn. We then watch as a cheeky babysitter enjoys some lesbian love with her client, and finally the action moves to a disco orgy party in which everyone gets in on the fun. A slap-happy sexvid that delivers plenty of passion!
