Katie's head hit the pillow like it was the first time she'd ever laid eyes on it, the city lights humming faintly through the window as if mocking her. She'd been running on fumes all day-meetings, deadlines, the kind of stress that makes your brain fog and your bones ache. But now, lying there, she just wanted to disappear. Her eyes flicked to the bed, and the sight of it stripped to the mattress made her pause. No blankets, no pillows-like someone had taken everything she needed to feel safe.

Then, the door creaked open. A shadow slithered in, and Katie's heart did that stupid, jumpy thing it does when you're already on edge. She didn't even have time to scream before the gun pressed into her ribs. A silenced pistol, sleek and cold, the kind of weapon that makes you think about the city's underbelly. The hitman's voice was low, almost like he was whispering a secret, but his eyes were hard, like steel. "You got a minute, Katie?" he asked, the way a guy might ask for a smoke after a long day.......
