Welcome loyal minions The trailer is out for Marvel_s new Jessica Jones series on Netflix, and it is POWERFUL. Krysten Ritter stars in the story of a former superhero turned unwilling criminal turned P.I., and it looks like it_s going to be a good one.If you_re looking for a feel-good story, though, look away. This story is dark. Jones gets her powers in an accident, and after a short run of superhero-ing, she is manipulated by supervillain the Purple Man into being his crime-committing monkey. If you want more Jessica Jones backstory before you see the show, you should pick up Alias volume 1 and 2 from your local comic book store. It_s one of my favorite books, and I promise you won_t be disappointed. Here_s a cool new gadget for you conspiracy theorists who think you_re being spied on by drones. Battelle has released a device called DroneDefender, which is basically an anti-drone gun. This nondestructive tech utilizes a non-kinetic solution to defend airspace up to 13-hundred feet against UAS, such as quadcopters and hexacopters, without compromising safety or risking collateral damage. Basically, that_s a fancy way of saying you shoot at the droid and take it over with radio waves. I want to get one and then just hijack a bunch of drones for a while and freak out their owners. Wanna see something I find sexy? HNNNGH. Well, one lucky fan now owns a go-kart shaped exactly like that. See, Playstation held a contest on Twitter, with the prize being a custom Batman Arkham Knight inspired Batmobile. Here_s the lucky winner driving his fancy new car. You know how most guys buy fancy Lambos or bitchin_ Camaros to pick up chicks? Yeah, that Batmobile is the only vehicle that would work on me. So I usually win the costume contest around here, with good reason, because I am the cosplay Queen, but this guy gives me a run for my money. Why does everyone wanna cast me as the useless love interest just cause I_m a girl? And finally, have you ever wanted to visit the Mos Eisley cantina? Well, for one night, you can On December 16th, Chicago bar the Whistler is set to become the Mos Eisley cantina. Local musicians will play*the role of the cantina_s house band Figrin D_an and the Modal Nodes. Apparently all droids will be allowed in there, as long as they_re over the age of 21. I want to go as Han Solo and settle that who shot first, Han or Greedo argument once and for all. I_ve always been more of a Han than a Leia anyway. If Putin_s goal was also to be viewed as the world_s most powerful person, well, mission accomplished The Russian President has topped Forbes_ list of the world_s most powerful individuals. He_s actually held the number one spot every year since 2013. Forbes bases its system on a person_s political, financial, and spiritual influence. Donald Trump was 72nd on the list last year, but the new US President-elect now sits at number two. Outgoing President Barack Obama slipped all the way to 48th in the rankings. And the man at the heart of what_s being called the largest financial data heist in US history has turned himself in 32-year old Joshua Samuel Aaron is the alleged face of a hacking ring that stole the personal data of more than 100 million people at 12 major banks - including 83 million from JPMorgan Chase alone. The FBI says the ring was involved in all sorts of other shady activities, between 2012 and 2015, including manipulating securities markets, artificially pumping up stock prices, running online casinos, and operating an illegal Bitcoin exchange. Aaron was arrested as soon as he landed in New York. If convicted on all charges he could face 117 years behind bars Don_t go away. Luckily, you_ve got us California_s progressive voting record this election continued, as the state_s ban on single-use plastic bags was reapproved The plastic bag industry put forward Proposition 67 hoping voters would reject the ban, but the measure ended up garnering 52 percent of the vote The prohibition against the bags was put in place two years ago by the state legislature. We_re starting off with an alleged billion dollar fraud scheme in New York City Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds ever Eila Adams joins us now with the story. Carli, federal prosecutors have arrested top executives from New York-based hedge fund Platinum Partners for running a scheme that swindled investors out of nearly one billion dollars Company founder Mark Nordlicht and six others have been charged with various crimes connected to the scheme, which started in 2012. Platinum quickly grew a reputation for exceptionally high returns, with its largest fund paying out 17 percent annually. It seemed too good to be true, and it was Court papers accuse Platinum execs of lying to clients about the value of funds they were managing, and paying out favored customers ahead of others. The documents also allege that when the hedge fund started going south in 2015, Nordlicht contemplated fleeing the country. Being charged with financial negligence never looks good on a resume, but doubly so when you_re the head of the International Monetary Fund IMF Chief Christine Lagarde_s future with the global organization is in jeopardy after a Paris court found her guilty in a 5-year investigation over a payout she made as French finance minister back in 2008. The surprise guilty verdict COULD have cost her a year in jail and a 13-thousand dollar fine. Instead it_s largely symbolic. IMF execs will meet in the near future to discuss her future with the agency. And China_s toxic smog problem has gone from bad to worse. Red alerts have been issued in at least 23 cities across the country this week, with the government calling for the shutdown of roads and factories, as well as cancelling hundreds of flights. Almost a ninth of the country is covered by the thick smog. On Monday evening in Beijing, the air quality levels were slightly improved, but were still EIGHT TIMES higher than the World Health Organization_s recommended maximum. He_s been a big part of Saturday Night Live_s past and its present, so it_s only right that he should be part of its future Baldwin will be hosting the show on February 11th, bringing his record for most times hosting up to SEVENTEEN Baldwin has actually been on SNL quite a bit this season with his hilarious impersonation of Donald Trump In fact, given that Kristen Stewart is hosting the week before, SNL will have back-to-back hosts that @RealDonaldTrump has trolled on Twitter Quite the Golden Age for satire And speaking of presidents, Kevin Spacey_s Frank Underwood is returning for another term By which I mean season Netflix has announced that the fifth season of House of Cards will begin streaming on May 30th The teaser video that accompanied the announcement doesn_t tell us much, but you don_t have to be an expert in symbolism to see some dark times ahead I kind of can_t wait to find out what that means... but on the other hand, I kind of can La La Land may be wowing the movie-going world, but when it comes to musicals, TV is doing a pretty SUPER job too The CW has released more details on the big musical crossover happening between Supergirl and The Flash, and it_s sounding great The Supergirl episode on March 20th will serve as a small prelude, with most of the extravaganza saved for The Flash the next night That episode will appropriately be called Duet. Stars Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin are both veterans of Glee, so I_m expecting some pretty heroic harmonies And if musicals are your cup of tea, you might also be happy to hear that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is getting a reboot In a statement from Netflix, the network said The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye is back and ready to Make America Fabulous Again. Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series and production will kick off this spring Netflix also said that NONE of the original cast will be involved with the show. David Nosal was convicted of hacking after using an ex-colleague_s password to obtain confidential information from his former employer. In their ruling on his appeal, the judges found that it_s a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to use someone else_s password without authorization from the issuing company. If you want more Jessica Jones backstory before you see the show, you should pick up Alias volume 1 and 2 from your local comic book store. It_s one of my favorite books, and I promise you won_t be disappointed. Here_s a cool new gadget for you conspiracy theorists who think you_re being spied on by drones. Battelle has released a device called DroneDefender, which is basically an anti-drone gun. This nondestructive tech utilizes a non-kinetic solution to defend airspace up to 13-hundred feet against UAS, such as quadcopters and hexacopters, without compromising safety or risking collateral damage. The FBI says the ring was involved in all sorts of other shady activities, between 2012 and 2015, including manipulating securities markets, artificially pumping up stock prices, running online casinos, and operating an illegal Bitcoin exchange. We_re starting off with an alleged billion dollar fraud scheme in New York City Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds ever Eila Adams joins us now with the story. Carli, federal prosecutors have arrested top executives from New York-based hedge fund Platinum Partners for running a scheme that swindled investors out of nearly one billion dollars Company founder Mark Nordlicht and six others have been charged with various crimes connected to the scheme, which started in 2012. Platinum quickly grew a reputation for exceptionally high returns, with its largest fund paying out 17 percent annually. It seemed too good to be true, and it was Court papers accuse Platinum execs of lying to clients about the value of funds they were managing, and paying out favored customers ahead of others. The documents also allege that when the hedge fund started going south in 2015, Nordlicht contemplated fleeing the country. Being charged with financial negligence never looks good on a resume, but doubly so when you_re the head of the International Monetary Fund IMF Chief Christine Lagarde_s future with the global organization is in jeopardy after a Paris court found her guilty in a 5-year investigation over a payout she made as French finance minister back in 2008. The surprise guilty verdict COULD have cost her a year in jail and a 13-thousand dollar fine. Instead it_s largely symbolic. IMF execs will meet in the near future to discuss her future with the agency. And China_s toxic smog problem has gone from bad to worse. Red alerts have been issued in at least 23 cities across the country this week, with the government calling for the shutdown of roads and factories, as well as cancelling hundreds of flights. Almost a ninth of the country is covered by the thick smog. On Monday evening in Beijing, the air quality levels were slightly improved, but were still EIGHT TIMES higher than the World Health Organization_s recommended maximum. Stars Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin are both veterans of Glee, so I_m expecting some pretty heroic harmonies And if musicals are your cup of tea, you might also be happy to hear that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is getting a reboot In a statement from Netflix, the network said The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye is back and ready to Make America Fabulous Again. Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series and production will kick off this spring Netflix also said that NONE of the original cast will be involved with the show. The move follows announced plans by several other corporations to increase pay, including Starbucks, McDonald_s and Walmart. A ruling by a US appeals court has some people worried that their password sharing for streaming services like Netflix may have just become illegal. David Nosal was convicted of hacking after using an ex-colleague_s password to obtain confidential information from his former employer. In their ruling on his appeal, the judges found that it_s a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to use someone else_s password without authorization from the issuing company.
