Tensions between western nations and the rogue state are higher than ever.VS) And now international inspectors have landed in Tehran to get an up close and personal look at the nation_s controversial nuclear capabilities. Here_s the latest.1. VS) Senior officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency have descended on Iran amid ongoing concerns about their nuclear program. The six-member delegation is in the country to start a dialogue that is long overdue. Among the delegates are the IAEA_s chief inspector as well as its second in command.PP) This comes after the US EU and Australia imposed tough new sanctions over Iran_s nuclear program. While the allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons Iran vigorously denies it insisting they_re enriching uranium for use in energy only. An Iranian official says this trip should resolve any ambiguity and show their transparency regarding their nuclear aims. 2. VS) Although it may be hard to believe the US is in peace talks with the Taliban Several negotiators have been meeting with American officials in Qatar (kah-TAR) where they_re engaging in so-called trust-building measures. That includes discussions of a possible prisoner transfer.PP) However the Taliban have not publicly acknowledged that they_re engaging in any talks with the US. America on the other hand isn_t denying that negotiations are underway. Meanwhile the Afghan government was initially angry about not being involved but have since accepted that the talks would take place without their involvement.3. VS) Elsewhere in the Middle East the Syrian capital of Damascus saw some of its fiercest fighting to date over the weekend. At least 26 casualties were reported in the exchange between Syrian troops and opposition forces. The Syrian army regained control of much of the suburban region of Saqba (SAK-buh). PP) While the rebel Free Syrian Army seems to have been largely defeated it appears that they still have a small presence in the suburbs. Overall at least 60 people lost their lives nationwide just one day after the Arab League suspended its monitoring mission in Syria. Accurate reports of activity in the region are difficult to come by Vic as foreign journalists are being heavily restricted.VS) A very scary situation there Peyton and it doesn_t look like it_s going to get better any time soon.PP) Unfortunately not. Despite accusations of widespread fraud, Vladimir Putin has claimed victory in Russia_s federal elections. He secured roughly 65 percent of the vote, outperforming his nearest competitor by a four-to-one margin. Many are contesting the results however, and say polling stations nationwide were flooded with fraudulent names added to the voter registry. A series of protests are expected throughout the week. Putin served two terms as president until 2008, when term limits forced him to step down. He never fully relinquished power mind you, having spent the past four years serving as Prime Minister under his successor, Dmitri Medvedev d-MEE-tree mehd-V(y)EHD-yehf. US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu net-in-YAH-hoo met at the White House on Monday to discuss Iran_s nuclear program. The 2 leaders got together only a few hours after the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said the agency continues to have serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions. Let_s go now to Eila Adams for more on this story.EA) Vic, both men have made it clear that the Middle Eastern nation would be a genuine threat to Israel were it to develop nuclear weapon capabilities. Although Obama is stressing the continued use of diplomacy and sanctions, Netanyahu has refused to rule out a pre-emptive strike on Iran_s nuclear infrastructure. That being said, the Israeli leader has praised Obama for stressing that when it comes to keeping Tehran in check, all options are still on the table. EA) Here_s something you don_t hear very often - an actual APOLOGY from Rush Limbaugh. After a public outcry and the loss of several key sponsors, the conservative radio host is reeling in comments made last week about female contraception rights. Referring to law student Sandra Fluke_s congressional testimony, Limbaugh suggested she was a slut and a prostitute for wanting insurance companies to cover female birth control. He_s since recanted, at least SOMEWHAT, saying and i quote, My choice of words was not the best. And to put this in perspective Vic, as we all know he says a LOT of controversial things but he never apologizes. VS) Fascinating stuff, Eila. Have there been any rumblings that Limbaugh_s apology may be less about remorse and more about keeping his current advertisers? EA) There_s definitely been skepticism on both sides of the political spectrum. Many conservatives, including presidential candidate Ron Paul, have come out as saying Limbaugh_s retraction simply isn_t strong enough.VS) It_ll be interesting to see how this one plays out in the next few days. New statistics from the FBI show that US authorities are winning the fight against violent crime. According to the feds, murder rates dropped by 1-point-9 percent in 2011 and aggravated assault, robbery, and rpg were down nearly four percent nationwide. Criminologists call the numbers both significant and surprising, given the country_s current economic struggles. Experts attribute the drop in violent crime to an aging population, an increase in immigration, and a larger police presence from coast to coast. VS) The US Presidential election is just five months away, and a state that_s had more than its fair share of voting controversy is once again in the spotlight. The state of Florida and the US Department of Homeland Security have filed lawsuits against one another, over the sunshine state_s access to a government immigration database. For more on this developing story, let_s bring in Erica Stevens for the latest?ES) Vic, the state of Florida is looking to keep non-eligible citizens from casting ballots at the polls in November, and they claim they need access to the Homeland Security database to keep their records up-to-date and accurate. Federal authorities say the state_s efforts violate national voting laws, and are looking to quash Florida_s voter-purge in federal court. Last month, election officials in Florida say they found 26-hundred registered voters who were not US citizens. With the election just around the corner, federal authorities say the purge would take far too long to clean up, and would jeopardize the voting rights of thousands of lawful citizens in the meantime. ES) In other politically charged news, former Florida governor Jeb Bush has openly questioned the tactics of Tea Party leaders, and says that two of the Republican party_s most beloved figures - Ronald Reagan and Jeb_s Father, George Bush Senior- would have a hard time fitting in with the no-compromise conservatives running the GOP today. Speaking at a media breakfast in Manhattan, Bush said that both his father and Reagan had records of trying to accommodate voters on both sides. He also criticized the party_s approach to hot topics including debt reduction and immigration. Here are the stories we_ve been following today.RW) Russia and China hit back at the West after they came under fire for their pro-Syria stance on Monday. The exchange came after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton chastised their positions on Syria, warning that there is every possibility of civil war in the beleaguered country. The EU has also agreed to even stricter sanctions against the Syrian government. As a result, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (vlah-DEE-meer POO-tihn) called the West Cynical and added that the West lacked the patience to work out an adjusted and balanced resolution. China is being vocal in their criticism as well, saying Western nations are trying to, quote, impose a so-called solution on the Syrian people.RW) This hasn_t been a good year for cruise line Costa Cruises. First there was the Costa Concordia wreck, and now another of the company_s cruise liners has flirted with disaster. Eila Adams has been following this developing story and joins us now with the latest. EA) Rachelle, the Costa Allegra, carrying over one thousand passengers and crew, was left stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean after a fire broke out in the ship_s engine room. Making the situation worse is the fact that the ship broke down in waters that are prone to attacks by Somali pirates The good news is that nobody on board was injured. The Allegra is being towed to the nearby Seychelle (say-SHELL) Islands and should arrive sometime on Thursday. The ship is also being guarded by a 9 member anti-pirate wing of the Italian Navy. EA) In other news today, Transcanada has announced that it will proceed with the construction of part of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline. The White House rejected original plans for a pipeline running south from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico last month, amidst a whirlwind of criticism from environmental groups. But this new project, which will see a pipeline built between Cushing Oklahoma and Texas, does not require federal approval. It_s considered a major coup for Transcanada. The company says the project will cost 2-point-3 billion dollars and will generate 4-thousand American jobs. It should be operational within the next 18 months Rachelle.RW) So this project didn_t need government approval, but where does the Obama administration stand on it Eila? EA) The White House is actually APPLAUDING this new step. The original plan was only rejected because the White House said it needed more time to look things over. RW) So does this mean that Transcanada is giving up on the FULL-scale pipeline?EA) Oh no, not at all. They_re already planning an appeal for the more controversial sections.RW) Then this is far from the last we_ll hear of it I_m sure. Know as America_s Oldest Teenager, a radio, TV and music legend is no longer with us. Here_s Victoria with the story. VS) Eila, TV pioneer Dick Clark has died. He succumbed to a massive heart attack while undergoing an outpatient procedure in Santa Monica, Calofornia. Clark had been suffering from health problems for many years. He had type-2 diabetes and in 2004 suffered a debilitating stroke. Among his legendary achievements, Clark hosted American Bandstand, for decades - America_s longest-running variety show. He was also the man behind countless other popular programs, including the Pyramid game shows, the American Music Awards and Dick Clarks New years Rockin Eve. He was 82 years old, and will be dearly missed.On to the international front, India has put on a display of its growing military might with the successful launch of a long range missile. The Agni V (AG-nee 5) rocket is nuclear capable and can travel a distance of over three-thousand miles. That would place many Chinese cities within its striking range. India_s Defense Minister congratulated military officials on the launch, which they say met all objectives. India has stressed that the weapon is purely for deterrence, and that it will be exercising a no first-use policy. Rock `n roller Ted Nugent has drawn the ire of the US Secret Service. This follows controversial remarks he made about President Barack Obama at a National Rifle Association convention this past weekend in St. Louis. Nugent, an outspoken Republican supporter and gun enthusiast, isn_t thrilled with the prospect of Obama winning re-election. Here_s a brief excerpt. The Secret Service will be interviewing Nugent on Thursday in Oklahoma. Officials say the service supports a citizen_s right to free speech, but wants to determine the intent of Nugent_s statement. Meanwhile GOP candidate Mitt Romney_s campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul (SAWL) distanced the frontrunner from Nugent_s remarks, Eila. She called them divisive and offensive. EA) I_m sure Romney appreciates the support Vic, but who in their right mind would want to be linked to someone with such extreme views VS) Unfortunately Eila it_s a sign of the times. So as you saw on Naked News magazine this past weekend, the great Erica Stevens is BACK That hologram was a lot of fun but the REAL Erica will be joining me in a moment with the news as well as in the wrap up to talk a little about coming back. In the meantime, France_s president Nicolas Sarkozy (nee-koh-LAH sahr-koh-ZEE) being voted out of office is today_s top story. It_s the end of the Nicolas Sarkozy era in France. He was defeated by socialist challenger Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH oh-LAWND) in a run-off election on Sunday. It was far from a runaway result though - Hollande won the election with just an estimated 51-point-6 percent of the vote. Hollande celebrated his win, calling it a new start for Europe. Meanwhile, Sarkozy conceded defeat and accepted the full responsibility for his loss. Voters showed up in droves - with a voter turnout of an estimated 80 percent. Hollande will become France_s first left-wing president since 1995.And it wasn_t just France holding elections this weekend - voters went to the polls in Greece as well. But the end result was FAR from definitive. Erica Stevens has been tracking the developments there and she_s standing by with the results. Nice to have you back Erica. ES) Thank you very much Eila. Being in the newsroom here feels like I never left Anyway, all the major Greek parties suffered setbacks at the polls, and no single party came close to a majority. The right-leaning New Democracy Party - part of the present ruling coalition - fared the best with 19-percent support and 109 seats. But that_s just half of the support they received in 2009. The wide-ranging results appear to be a backlash against the strict austerity measures that have been put into place. There are two options now. Either a new coalition has to be formed, or they_ll have to set a date for a new election. Politicians have until May seventeenth to figure something out.ES) And guess who_s back in Russia? After serving four years in the lesser role of Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin has once again been inaugurated as President. The controversial leader was sworn in on Monday, and needless to say, not everyone was elated. Police in Moscow arrested roughly 120 protesters, many of whom accused Putin of stealing the election through widescale voter fraud. Russia_s newly-amended constitution gives the former KGB agent a guaranteed six-year term, and if re-elected Eila, he could remain as president until the year 2024. And no where is that more evident right now then in the West. There are currently 35 wildfires burning across 10 western states. Peyton priestly joins us now with more on this story in a Naked News Belletin. Vic, it_s suddenly turned into the worst fire season in recent memory. Low humidity and high temperatures are fueling fires across a number of states including Idaho, Utah, Oregon and Montana. The largest of which is burning in Idaho_s Salmon Challis national forrest where over 11-hundred firefighters are working around the clock to try and contain 2 seperate blazes. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange made his first public statement since being granted asylum in an Ecuadorian embassy in London.
