Meteorologists are warning that Hurricane Sandy could develop into a super storm when it makes landfall. International flights into Boston, Washington DC, New York, Philadelphia, and other cities have all been canceled. The storm has already left 60 dead after tearing its way through the Caribbean. And rather than weakening as it approaches land, it appears that Sandy is getting even stronger, with sustained winds hitting 85 miles per hour. Making things potentially WORSE Kat, the Frankenstorm is expected to collide with a winter storm AND a cold front.Now I understand the storm_s economic impact could be pretty significant as well Eila.BIG TIME Kat. The New York Stock Exchange is completely shut down. And for those of you into other forms of legal gambling, so are the casinos in Atlantic City.That_s a LOT of money that isn_t changing hands. I understand that even the presidential election campaigns are being affected. That_s right. Both candidates have canceled stops in crucial swing states due to Sandy. Mitt Romney has pulled out of an engagement in Virginia, while President Obama will miss an appearance in Ohio. The President is remaining in Washington so he can monitor the storm_s progress. He visited FEMA and promised Americans that the agency would respond big and respond fast in the wake of any serious damage. Many analysts are warning that in a worst-case scenario, some people might be unable to reach polling stations on Election Day. That_s all for now Kat, back to you.Thanks for those updates Eila. Speaking of the election, with just a week to go it_s still anybody_s race In the battleground state of Ohio, a CNNORC International survey has Obama with a 4-point lead over Romney. But another poll from the Ohio Newspaper Association has the candidates tied at 49-percent. That state_s 18 electoral votes could very well be the difference that swings the election one way or the other. The Romney camp is optimistic about their chances, noting that they have momentum on their side. We_ll be right back.

In the first hate crime case of its kind in the US, 196 charges are being levied at 5 defendants in a shocking case of human cruelty. In 2011, 4 mentally and physically disabled adults were found imprisoned in a Philadelphia boiler room with little to no food and water. Linda Ann Weston is accused of being a ringleader in a plot to steal their social security checks.US Attorneys have charged 3 European men with making and unleashing the Gozi (GO-zee) computer virus. Between 2005 and 2011, they claim that the virus retrieved banking information and stole over 50 million dollars. One man has pleaded guilty, with the other 2 awaiting extradition.The FAA in the US is struggling to come up with an explanation for the electrical problems plaguing Boeing_s new Dreamliner jets. The global Dreamliner fleet has been grounded as engineers scramble to pinpoint the issue. The Dreamliners were grounded last week following a battery fire in Boston and previous incidents in Japan.And the US military has taken an important step forward on the gender equality front. Women are now allowed to participate in direct combat units. The policy shift will create a number of new jobs for female troops. I_m EA and this is Naked News In our top story today, North Korea has irked the international community once again, this time by following through on their threat to test launch a long-range missile. Katherine Curtis has been following the latest on this story, what can you tell us? Eila, although some details are still sketchy, here_s what we know. The North Korean regime says the launch successfully carried a satellite into orbit. This claim was further confirmed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.So unlike the previous attempt in April, this isn_t just a bunch of spin and rhetoric on the part of North Korean officials. Exactly - that one failed, and by all accounts, this one did NOT.Definitely a big moment for Pyongyang. Ands I_m sure the international community is NONE to pleased.Not at all Eila. As you_d expect, most countries are outraged by this development. Although North Korea insists the deployed satellite is strictly for scientific research, the U.S. and South Korea are unconvinced. They immediately condemned the launch, suggesting it_s geared at testing ballistic missile technology. Several Security Council members, including China and Russia, say the move is in direct violation of U.N. resolutions, and may destabilize the Korean peninsula. The UK_s response has been measured but still firm, with Foreign Secretary William Hague saying he_s disappointed the country has quote, chosen to prioritize this launch over improving the livelihood of its people. EIla, in what_s being heralded as a significant political move, President Barack Obama has recognized Syria_s opposition as the rightful representative of the nation_s citizens. This puts the U.S. in line with several other countries on the issue, including France, Turkey, and Great Britain. Michigan Republicans have signed two right to work measures into law. The highly-controversial legislation will allow union employees to forgo paying dues, a move critics say could severely weaken union bargaining power. Michigan currently boasts the most protected workforce in the country, with union members accounting for nearly 18 percent of the work force. And in Washington, brinksmanship between Barack Obama and the GOP continues, with the latest threat coming from Lindsey Graham. The South Carolina Senator says if the President insists on following through with tax increases for the wealthy, Republicans may refuse to raise the debt ceiling in the New Year. Many conservatives believe Obama_s resistance to several economic issues, including entitlement reforms, could lead to the kind of depression Greece continues to face. We_ll be right back.

Senators Mark Warner and Joe Manchin, both A rating members of the National Rifle Association, have changed their stances on the issue. Manchin says it_s time to quote move beyond rhetoric on gun control. Even Nevada_s Harry Reid, who_s one of the NRA_s highest-ranking political allies, has hinted at changing his stance. President Barack Obama will no doubt need their support. On Monday he met with key cabinet members in Washington to discuss how gun laws might be changed. QUICK TURN TO TV.So the tide is definitely turning VicI think that_s the right move Eila. So what kind of proposals should we expect from these government officials?Well at the very least, Democrats will be pushing to reinstate the assault weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. In other words, guns that can fire many bullets before needing to be reloaded. On the other hand, some politicians have been outspoken about arming teachers and principals as a way to better protect schools. It_s a complex problem that will surely require a complex solution. And what does the NRA have to say about all this? Oddly enough Vic, they_ve gone silent. Traditionally, the organization has been vocal in its support of gun rights following shooting incidents. But they_ve taken down their Facebook page, and have yet to issue any sort of statement.That_s probably a smart move right now. Anyway, many thanks for the update Eila. Rachelle Wilde joins us now with a look at some of the other headlines we_re tracking today. Rachelle? Vic, Syrian Vice President Farouk Al-Sharaa has publicly stated his belief that the army of Bashar al-Assad will not be able to defeat the country_s rebel forces. The surprising admission, made to a Lebanese newspaper, comes as opposition troops close in on the Syrian capital. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has announced that he_s engaged - to a woman almost 50 years his junior The 76-year old is planning to marry 28-year old Francesca Pascale. The ex-PM has also hinted at making another run at public office in Italy_s next election. And the US computer hacker accused of breaking into the email accounts of some of Hollywood_s biggest stars has been given a 10 year jail sentence 35-year old Christopher Chaney of Jacksonville, Florida, admitted to gaining unauthorized access to the accounts of Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera, and Mila Kunis, to name a few. And for the families and friends of the victims in Connecticut - every single one of us are thinking of you. You_re in our thoughts and prayers. Now let_s get to the latest on this horrific event. With the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut hanging over the U.S., several high-profile dignitaries descended on the town to offer their condolences. This included President Obama, who took to the airwaves on Sunday night to console a nation in mourning. With more, here_s Eila Adams. Vic, in an emotional speech, the President pledged to take action to prevent more gun-related tragedies in the future, saying quote, We can_t accept events like this as routine. In addition to personally naming the victims of Friday_s shooting, Obama praised the faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as Newtown authorities. Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the killer - 20-year-old Adam Lanza - used a Bushmaster assault-type rifle to literally shoot his way into the school. It appears the weapon, as well as several others brought to the scene, belonged to Lanza_s mother Nancy, who had been gunned down earlier that same day. Lanza had no criminal record, and most statements taken from those who knew him say he was a quiet, normal, young man with no history of violent activity. And not surprisingly, Vic, the tragic incident has also fanned the flames on the national gun control debate.If not now, then when? I understand that California Senator Dianne Feinstein has pledged to introduce new gun control legislation early next year. That_s right. The bill would ban the sale, transfer, transportation, and possession of certain firearms, including assault weapons. In many ways it sounds similar to the assault-weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. EA) It does and I think the US it at a place now where that sort of ban will get the backing that it needs.Let_s hope so. Thanks very much for the update Eila.Laura Conner is standing by with more of todays headlines. Vic, in Japan, after a three-year hiatus, the Liberal Democrats are back in charge. A landslide election victory saw the conservative-leaning party claim 294 seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament. Prime Minister-elect Shinzo Abe says his main goal will be to repair the country_s fragile economy. Votes are being counted in Egypt_s new constitutional referendum, with early reports suggesting the document will be passed. Although President Mohammed Morsi staunchly endorses the constitution, many detractors believe it_s both poorly drafted and far too pro-Islamist. Official results aren_t expected until later in the week.The U.S. Defense Department is sending patriot missiles to Turkey in a bid to protect its borders from possible Syrian attacks. Several hundred American troops will also be deployed to the region, which has seen a steady decrease in stability since the Syrian conflict began 20 months ago. We_ll be right back.

The North Korean regime says the launch successfully carried a satellite into orbit. This claim was further confirmed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.So unlike the previous attempt in April, this isn_t just a bunch of spin and rhetoric on the part of North Korean officials. Exactly - that one failed, and by all accounts, this one did NOT.Definitely a big moment for Pyongyang. Ands I_m sure the international community is NONE to pleased.Not at all Eila. As you_d expect, most countries are outraged by this development. Although North Korea insists the deployed satellite is strictly for scientific research, the U.S. and South Korea are unconvinced. They immediately condemned the launch, suggesting it_s geared at testing ballistic missile technology. Several Security Council members, including China and Russia, say the move is in direct violation of U.N. resolutions, and may destabilize the Korean peninsula. The UK_s response has been measured but still firm, with Foreign Secretary William Hague saying he_s disappointed the country has quote, chosen to prioritize this launch over improving the livelihood of its people. Senators Mark Warner and Joe Manchin, both A rating members of the National Rifle Association, have changed their stances on the issue. Manchin says it_s time to quote move beyond rhetoric on gun control. Even Nevada_s Harry Reid, who_s one of the NRA_s highest-ranking political allies, has hinted at changing his stance. President Barack Obama will no doubt need their support. On Monday he met with key cabinet members in Washington to discuss how gun laws might be changed. QUICK TURN TO TV.So the tide is definitely turning VicI think that_s the right move Eila. So what kind of proposals should we expect from these government officials?Well at the very least, Democrats will be pushing to reinstate the assault weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. In other words, guns that can fire many bullets before needing to be reloaded. On the other hand, some politicians have been outspoken about arming teachers and principals as a way to better protect schools. It_s a complex problem that will surely require a complex solution. And what does the NRA have to say about all this? Oddly enough Vic, they_ve gone silent. Traditionally, the organization has been vocal in its support of gun rights following shooting incidents. But they_ve taken down their Facebook page, and have yet to issue any sort of statement.That_s probably a smart move right now. Anyway, many thanks for the update Eila. And the US computer hacker accused of breaking into the email accounts of some of Hollywood_s biggest stars has been given a 10 year jail sentence 35-year old Christopher Chaney of Jacksonville, Florida, admitted to gaining unauthorized access to the accounts of Scarlett Johansson, Christina Aguilera, and Mila Kunis, to name a few. With the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut hanging over the U.S., several high-profile dignitaries descended on the town to offer their condolences. This included President Obama, who took to the airwaves on Sunday night to console a nation in mourning. With more, here_s Eila Adams. Vic, in an emotional speech, the President pledged to take action to prevent more gun-related tragedies in the future, saying quote, We can_t accept events like this as routine. In addition to personally naming the victims of Friday_s shooting, Obama praised the faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as well as Newtown authorities. Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the killer - 20-year-old Adam Lanza - used a Bushmaster assault-type rifle to literally shoot his way into the school. It appears the weapon, as well as several others brought to the scene, belonged to Lanza_s mother Nancy, who had been gunned down earlier that same day. Lanza had no criminal record, and most statements taken from those who knew him say he was a quiet, normal, young man with no history of violent activity. And not surprisingly, Vic, the tragic incident has also fanned the flames on the national gun control debate.If not now, then when? I understand that California Senator Dianne Feinstein has pledged to introduce new gun control legislation early next year. That_s right. The bill would ban the sale, transfer, transportation, and possession of certain firearms, including assault weapons. In many ways it sounds similar to the assault-weapons ban that was repealed in 2004. EA) It does and I think the US it at a place now where that sort of ban will get the backing that it needs.Let_s hope so. A landslide election victory saw the conservative-leaning party claim 294 seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament. Prime Minister-elect Shinzo Abe says his main goal will be to repair the country_s fragile economy. Votes are being counted in Egypt_s new constitutional referendum, with early reports suggesting the document will be passed. Although President Mohammed Morsi staunchly endorses the constitution, many detractors believe it_s both poorly drafted and far too pro-Islamist. Official results aren_t expected until later in the week.The U.S. Defense Department is sending patriot missiles to Turkey in a bid to protect its borders from possible Syrian attacks.
