She_s been following the story of a brutal rampage in Afghanistan that has shocked the world. What_s going on Natasha?NO) It_s not a pretty picture Eila. 16 innocent Afghans are dead including women and children after an experienced US soldier went house to house on a shooting spree. EA) And do we know WHY this happened? NO) Not yet, many of the details are still unknown but what we DO know is that this was the soldiers 4th tour of duty and for some reason, he snapped. EA) And there are some serious ramifications aren_t there?NO) That_s right, president Hamid Karzai (haw-MIHD kahr-Z-EYE) has weighed in as have the Taliban. Here_s the latest Eila.NO) US officials are trying to find a motive after an American soldier went on a bloody house-to-house rampage, killing 16 civilians. Not much is known about the alleged shooter so far, other than the fact that he_s an Army Staff Sargeant who was apparently acting alone and turned himself in. The sergeant, in his mid-30s, had served several tours of duty in Iraq, but was new to Afghanistan. The Taliban took no time to call out American forces as sick-minded savages and swore revenge for the killings. Afghan president Hamid Karzai (haw-MIHD kahr-Z-EYE) called the massacre unforgivable. This comes just weeks after riots erupted over the burning of Korans by U.S. troops.In other news from the rergion, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (KOH-fee ANN-nan) says he_s optimistic that a peace deal can be made in Syria. This despite 2 days of talks with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl AH-sahd) that failed to yield any results. After the meetings, Annan said that finding a peace process would be difficult, but he held out hope. Complicating the issue in Syria is the fact that many opposition leaders refuse to open a dialogue with al-Assad, claiming he_s a war criminal. They also claim that any meetings that he agrees to are simply to buy time before any outside intervention takes place.Elsewhere in the Middle East, for a fourth straight day, Israeli airstrikes pounded the Gaza strip, injuring at least 40 people. Israel says they_re targeting rocket launching sites as more than one-hundred have been fired from Gaza since Friday. It_s the most intense fighting in the region in months, forcing 500-thousand Israelis into shelters. Schools have also been closed as a precaution Eila. EA) Between this, Syria, Iran and Afghanistan, that area of the world is pretty scary these days. NO) You_re right and the unfortunate part is that there doesn_t seem to be any end in site in ANY of the conflicts. Tide normally sells for between ten and twenty dollars, but you can get it for half that price on the streets Police in Virginia recently raided the home of a suspected cocaine dealer and found more liquid soap than drugs Meanwhile in Minnesota, police arrested a man and charged him with stealing 25-thousand dollars worth of the stuff over a fifteen month period Forget taking over the world, a Quebec man is demanding control of the entire solar system Sylvio Langevin (French pronunciation) filed a lawsuit demanding to be recognized as the planetary proprietor of Earth, the Sun, the other planets, and even a few moons for good measure. Sounds cute, but Quebec_s Superior Court judge was not impressed He_s declared Langevin to be a quarrelsome litigant, meaning he can_t file any more lawsuits without permission from a judge. Langevin_s filed 45 lawsuits since 2001, including a 1 billion dollar case against the federal government in 2009. Kazakhstan has filed an official complaint of their own after suffering yet another embarrassment at the hands of Borat When Maria Dymitrienko won a gold medal at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait, she stood upon the podium and listened as the organizers accidentally played the mock anthem from Sasha Baron Cohen_s hit movie. In the Borat version, the anthem takes pride in Kazakhstan_s potassium exports and clean prostitutes. To her credit, Dymitrienko stood there and handled it well, and embarrassed event organizers re-did the medal ceremony when they heard about their mistake. Our top story today once again comes out of Syria.VS) That_s right. Russia_s involvement in the conflict there has been a major cause for concern amongst western powers.ES) And those fears will only be heightened with this latest development. Russia is sending two warships - and hundreds of marines - to the region. VS) This is your news off the top1. VS) Two Russian amphibious assault ships are en route for Syrian waters, and will be docking in the port of Tartus. Moscow says that the ships have been deployed to protect Russian personnel and equipment in the event of a full-scale evacuation. Syria is a major stronghold for Russia in the Middle East, and the port of Tartus is their only naval base outside of the former Soviet Union. ES) The Russian naval base there is believed to house very sophisticated electronic eavesdropping gadgets, and there are rumors that it could be attacked by Syrian rebels. The two ships could carry as many as 600 troops, which will be used to dismantle the base. However, other intelligence reports claim the ships will be carrying anti-aircraft missiles and other heavy artillery for the Syrian army.2. VS) In other news today, Myanmar human rights champion Aung San Suu Kyi (ONG SAN SOO CHEE) is making a landmark visit to the United Kingdom. The formerly imprisoned political activist and leader kicked things off with a debate at the London School of Economics. It_s her first trip to Europe since 1988.ES) Suu Kyi will spend 4 days in the UK, and her stay will include visits with the royal family and members of British parliament. It_s just part of a 2-week international tour that has sparked hopes of true political reform in Myanmar. Suu Kyi will also be making stops in Switzerland, France, and Norway. 3. VS) Canadian murder suspect Luka Magnotta has been extradited and returned home. The 29-year old, accused of killing a Montreal university student and putting his body parts in the mail, was the focus of an international manhunt until he was apprehended in Berlin on June fourth. Magnotta landed at Montreal_s Mirabel airport Monday night.ES) Canadian detectives planned to interrogate Magnotta ahead of his initial court appearance in Quebec. Canadian government officials thanked Germany for helping to catch the fugitive, and for his swift extradition home. When his case goes to court, it will be one of the most closely watched Canadian trials in years Vic. VS) No doubt about that. It_s comforting to know he_ll face justice here on Canadian soil.ES) Indeed. On the positive side, he described the 42-year old congressman from Wisconsin as a decent man. But he also said Ryan_s goals are fundamentally different from his own.Ryan is a strict fiscal conservative who aims to drastically slash government spending, scrap Obamacare, and reform Medicare and Medicaid. He_s also into noodling that_s not what it sounds like n noodling is catching catfish with your bare hands. Ryan and Romney are currently on a trip through swing states, where they hope their joint platform will convince the public to vote Republican.An AWOL US soldier who planned on killing scores of his fellow servicemen has been sentenced to life in prison. Peyton Priestly has been following this story and she joins us now with a Naked News Bulletin.Rachelle, former Private First Class Naser Jason Abdo a Muslim convert n had initially refused to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. He went AWOL shortly afterward, and started working on a plot to bomb a restaurant near Fort Hood in Texas that was popular with servicemen and their families. He was convicted of 6 charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Abdo represented himself in court, where he claimed he would continue to pursue jihad until judgment day. Two former border control agents n including a high-profile spokesperson for the agency n have been found guilty of smuggling HUNDREDS of illegal immigrants across the USMexico border. Raul and Fidel Villarreal (VEE-yah-ray-AL) used their position to sneak Mexican and Brazilian citizens into the country in exchange for cash. One Brazilian woman testified that she paid 12-thousand dollars to be smuggled in. The brothers, knowing they were being investigated, fled to Tijuana in 2006, but they were soon arrested and extradited back to the US. Rachelle?Thanks Peyton. This is your NEWS OFF THE TOP It_s been revealed that US President Barack Obama has signed a covert order allowing American support of Syrian rebels. It_s not known exactly when Obama signed the order, but sources say it was within the last couple months. Obama_s directive allows for secret support from the CIA and other intelligence agencies.But the Obama administration has already ruled out arming the rebels, so the covert order likely involves intelligence REElays, such as the location and movement of Syrian troops. Earlier this week the US government also paved the way for the Washington Syrian Support Group to send money - but not weapons - to assist the rebel cause.Disturbing new details are coming to light concerning the Colorado movie theater gunman, James Holmes. The University of Colorado psychiatrist who was treating Holmes prior to the incident, Lynne Fenton, was extremely concerned about his behavior. Fenton told colleagues that Holmes might be a danger to others. However Holmes dropped out of school before a proper team of experts from the university could be assembled to evaluate him. At this time it_s not known whether Fenton continued to treat Holmes after he dropped out. At least 2 more people have died in Uganda_s horrific Ebola outbreak. That brings the death toll to at LEAST 16 people. 18 more remain in an isolation ward in the area where the outbreak began. Health workers have been combing the district to find people who may be infected, and also to advise residents on preventative measures.There isn_t any real treatment for the disease, which can be transmitted either by close contact or bodily fluids. Health officials say they hope this wont be a repeat of the last Ugandan outbreak, which killed hundreds. In the midst of the outbreak, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton is scheduled to visit as part of her African tour.And that_s your first look at the news everyone I don_t know Peyton but if I were her, I_d seriously consider postponing that part of her trip.Ah, I_m sure they_ll be keeping her VERY safe, don_t go away folks, we_ll be right back.

The headlines And most notably, a major development from the Republican campaign trail in the US. It_s now official - Newt Gingrich will be dropping out of the race for the White House. And yes, Mr. Gingrich is expected to wave the white flag in a formal announcement next Tuesday. The fact that he lasted as long as he did in the Republican battle is a surprise to most pundits. But it wasn_t without a steep price. The Gingrich campaign is now 4-point-3 million dollars in debt. His campaign scored a big victory early on with a win in South Carolina. But he failed to win other Southern states and it became increasingly obvious that he couldn_t challenge Mitt Romney_s candidacy. Whether he_ll choose to throw his support behind Romney_s White House bid remains unknown.Elsewhere in the US, Connecticut has become the fifth state in as many years to choose life over death. On Wednesday, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed new legislation that abolishes capital punishment. The new law will take effect immediately. That means the maximum sentence in state trials will be life in prison. However, the law isn_t retroactive, and won_t change circumstances for prisoners already facing the death penalty. Connecticut is the seventeenth state in the US to abandon capital punishment. Side, long There are shocking allegations out of Los Angeles international airport. 4 security screeners have been arrested on drug trafficking and bribery charges. According to a prosecutor, the Transportation Security Administration staffers - both past and present - accepted 22 payments of up to 24-hundred dollars each in order to allow large shipments of cocaine, pot, and meth through x-ray screening machines. Some of the shipments weighed up to 44 pounds. This is being described as a significant breakdown of the screening system. EIla, along with the TSA employees, several other people have been charged as being drug mules. EA) This is a huge black eye for an organization that_s not exactly popular to begin with, isn_t it?VS) It sure is. They_re patting down and strip-searching elderly women, but for a few dollars they_ll help you smuggle all the drugs you want.EA) (shakes head) This is the last thing they needed, PR-wise. VS) Welcome to Naked News, Iim VS. Hereis whatis making news today. At least 78 people are dead in yet another apparent massacre in Syria. Troops and militia loyal to President Bashar al-Assad (bah-SHAHR ahl AH-sahd) are accused of the killings in a central Syrian village near Hama (hah-MAH). Itis believed that over half of the victims are women and children. Officials call the claims ìcompletely falsei, and say troops intervened after a ìterroristi group targeted innocent civilians. The alleged massacre happened just before the UN Security Council was scheduled to convene to review the Syrian situation. In the 15 months since the uprising began, 13-thousand lives have been lost.Federal agents in Puerto Rico have arrested DOZENS of people suspected of smuggling drugs into the US. 2 drug rings in particular thought to be responsible, were at the center of the busts. Eila Adams has been watching this developing story and joins us now with the latest. EA) Vic, 36 people in all were arrested including airline workers and baggage handlers at San Juanis international airport. They_re all accused being part of 2 criminal organizations that were responsible for smuggling huge amounts of drugs into the US via commercial aircraft. Itis believed that one of the drug rings has been using San Juanis airport for over a decade. 45 people were indicted including a dozen current and former employees of American Airlines. The DEA claims that over 61 thousand pounds of cocaine was smuggled through Puerto Rico and into the US since 1999. And former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak (HOHS-nee moo-BAH-rahk) is in intensive care after his health took a turn for the worse. He was reportedly placed on a ventilator several times while in the ICU. He was taken to a prison hospital Saturday after being receiving a life sentence for his role in the deaths of pro-democracy demonstrators last year. The state-run news organization MENA says that officials are suggesting that he be moved to either a military or private hospital. It doesn_t look good for him VicVS) I guess facing a life behind bars will do that to people Eila.EA) No doubt, and it gets even worse. Mubarak is also reportedly suffering a nervous breakdown AND severe depression.VS) I can_t say I feel bad for him, anyway thanks for the updates Eila, we_ll check back with you shortly.VS) Natasha Olenski up ahead with your naked business report. We_ll begin today with breaking news out of Honduras.RS) A massive prison fire has claimed hundreds of lives.NO) Here_s what we know so far. RS) Early reports indicate the fire, which began late Tuesday night, claimed the lives of at LEAST 272 prisoners. However with authorities still sifting through the debris that number is expected to rise. The prison is in Comayagua (co-ma-YA-gwa), a town about 60 miles north of the Honduran capital. NO) While many died in their cells, some inmates managed to escape by breaking through the roof and then jumping from the building. The exact number of escaped convicts remains unknown. There_s conflicting information out there as to exactly how the fire started. Early reports blame an electrical short circuit while others say a prisoner riot sparked the blaze. NO) Iran has taken a concerning step closer to gaining full-blown nuclear capabilities. Images of the first-ever Iranian made nuclear fuel rods were broadcast on State-run Press TV Wednesday. Dressed in a white lab coat, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was on hand to help personally insert the rods into a reactor in Tehran. RS) The fuel rods are produced at a facility in central Iran. According to state media, the facility_s main purpose is to create radioisotopes for cancer treatment. As expected, the development has caused a spike in tension amongst Western nations, who remain convinced Iran_s research program will eventually yield a nuclear weapon. NO) Turning our attention stateside, US President Barack Obama has urged Chinese VP Xi Jinping (SHEE JIN PING) to get China to play by the rules when it comes to international trade. Xi is making a 5-day visit across the US and will become China_s new leader in 2013. During Xi_s meeting with Obama, the US President expressed his firm belief that China needed to stop artificially undervaluing its currency. RS) He also added that it was time for Beijing to rectify the imbalance in US-China trade relations by opening its doors to American manufacturers. On Wednesday, Vice President Xi spent time with Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill. Later in the day he delivered a speech to major private and public sector leaders at a Washington hotel. Next up on his itinerary? A visit to the American heartland He_s headed to Iowa. Welcome to Naked News, in our top story today a HUGE reform to US immigration policy is taking effect. As a result, countless undocumented immigrants are now seeking temporary permits to allow them to live and work in America. Long lineups have already been forming in states with big populations of undocumented immigrants, like California and Texas. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that over a million people will apply for the temporary permits, which will allow them to stay and work for two years. It_s all part of a sweeping reform introduced by President Obama earlier this year. His critics accuse him of trying to buy the Latino vote in the upcoming election.The trials and tribulations of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange continue, with a new wrinkle in his fight against extradition. Eila Adams is following this story and joins us now with a news bulletin. Vic, Assange has been granted political asylum by Ecuador. The founder of the whistleblowing website Wikileaks has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for the past two months. He_s been fighting extradition to Sweden where he faces sexual assault charges. Ecuadorian embassy officials say they feel Assange_s human rights may be violated, and accused the UK of making an open threat to enter the embassy and arrest him. But Assange isn_t out of the woods yet. He can_t leave the embassy or he_ll be arrested, and the UK Foreign Office is threatening to strip the embassy of their diplomatic status.And in Dallas, a state of emergency has been declared, due to the West Nile Virus. There_s been an alarming outbreak of the potentially fatal disease in and around the Dallas area. So far, at least 14 people have died in Texas after contracting the virus, which is carried by birds and then transmitted to people through mosquitoes. Declaring the state of emergency will allow them to begin aerial spraying to eradicate the infected mosquitoes. In the meantime, area residents are being urged to use a lot of insecticide, and to avoid going out at dusk or dawn. We_ll be right back.

This is the latest carnage in the horrific drug war that_s been escalating in Mexico.In business news, the CEO of Yahoo has given into mounting pressure for him to resign. This comes after it was discovered that he did what MANY of us do, padded his resume. Here_s Peyton Priestly to explain. PP) Thank you Vic. As you mentioned, Scott Thompson, the 3rd Yahoo CEO in 3 years, has resigned after it was discovered that he lied on his resume Thompson had claimed that he possessed degrees in both accounting and computer science. However, a shareholder - discovered that Thompson had LIED about the computer science degree. Ironically, Thompson was responsible for cost-cutting measures at Yahoo that slashed 2000 jobs from the payroll.Thompson wasn_t the only notable resignation in the business world. A top executive at financial firm JPMorgan Chase has also stepped down. Their chief investment officer Ina Drew (EYE-nah) has announced that she will retire after the company stunned the industry last week with news it had lost 2 BILLION dollars since April. Drew had offered to resign numerous times after the news broke, but was rejected by CEO Jamie Dimon (DY-mon), Until NOW that is. The video, seen by millions around the world, urged people to help capture accused Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony. Although Kony himself hasn_t been apprehended, a senior commander in his Resistance Army WAS Caesar Acellam SEE-zur ah-KEL-um was arrested near the Congo-Central African Republic border. Ugandan officials consider Acellam_s capture an _intelligence coup,_ given that he was one of the Resistance Army_s key military strategists.
