I hear it_s getting VERY heated VicIt sure is Natasha. The Romney campaign is demanding an apology over allegations that Team Obama is making in their latest campaign ads. Namely, that Romney is outright LYING to the American people. In a nutshell, Romney used to run a company called Bain Capital, but claims he left in 1999 to work on the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. However, the Obama team claims that Romney_s own SEC filings PROVE he was with Bain for a few more years, when the firm was outsourcing jobs to other countries. They say that either Romney_s lying about when he left, or the filings were false, which constitutes a felony. Romney_s now claiming that he and I quote retired retroactively. They_re demanding an apology for the deceptive ads but, unsurprisingly, Obama says they won_t be getting one.In financial news today, American government officials speaking anonymously say that the US Justice Department is building cases against several prominent financial institutions for manipulating interest rates. The firms - including Barclays n are suspected of fixing the London interbank offered rate n or LIBOR. Those rates would then determine borrowing costs for everything from mortgages to student loans. Barclays has already agreed to a 450-million dollar settlement in a case relating to rate-rigging. However, that deal does NOT protect individual employees from criminal prosecution. It_s expected that charges will be laid against at least one bank within the next several months.A New York Times report alleges that the US Food and Drug Administration has been spying on its own scientists The FDA has admitted to monitoring the emails of as many as 21 people, including some messages that were sent directly to President Barack Obama over safety issues. The agency claims that they had evidence that trade secrets had been leaking out, in particular from the makers of medical devices and prescription drugs. A spokesperson for the FDA says that they limited their monitoring to communications on work computers. But some critics claim that it_s a tactic by the agency to discourage whistle-blowers. Here she is with a Naked News bulletin.Rachelle, Russia is warning the US against getting involved in Syria. Earlier in the week, President Obama threatened enormous consequences if the Syrian government brought biological or chemical weapons into play against rebels, something they had hinted they might do. But Russia and China warned that they_re committed to keeping the US or any other country from breaking international law.A new NBCWall Street Journal poll shows that the presidential race is getting tighter. President Obama now has a 4 point lead among registered voters n 48 percent to 44 percent. That_s down from July, when Obama had a 6 point lead over Mitt Romney. Women, voters under 35, and Latinos all show a significant lead for the President. But the biggest difference is with black voters, who support Obama by a 94-percent to 0-percent margin.But the more immediate concern for Republicans is weather. There_s a possibility that Tampa could be hit with a hurricane during next week_s Republican National Convention. , Meteorologists warn that Tropical Storm Isaac could develop into a hurricane and hit Tampa as early as Sunday. However, they also say that long range forecasts can be off by hundreds of miles so I guess we_ll see Rachelle.They were expecting this possibility though, right?That_s right. They did a hurricane drilla few months ago and have contingency plans in place just in case. RW) Alright, thank you Peyton. We_ll get back to you for more headlines in just a few moments. EA) Hello, and welcome to Naked News, I_m EA with BREAKING NEWS to lead us off today. Police in Berlin say they_ve arrested wanted fugitive and alleged killer Luka Magnotta. According to the Bild newspaper, Magnotta was caught in an internet cafe. After escaping from Montreal, it_s believed he traveled from Paris to Berlin on a bus. Authorities say he_s now in custody and could stand before a judge as early as Tuesday. The 29-year old is the prime suspect in the horrific murder of a Montreal university student, whose dismembered body parts were put in the mail. International media outlets are referring to Magnotta as the Canadian Psycho.Over to China now, where the 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen (tee-ENN-ah-men) Square massacre was marked once again with the arrest of dissidents. Peyton Priestly joins us now with the story. PP) Eila, hundreds of activists in Beijing have been rounded up on the anniversary of the 1989 event. According to police, they were taken into custody to prevent them from demonstrating on the June 4th anniversary. Tianenmen Square is still a sore spot with the Chinese government. They censor any mention of it in state media, and continue to deny any wrongdoing. This roundup of activists is something that happens every year at this time. It also comes after the US angered China by calling for the release of dissidents jailed during the protests 23 years ago.And the end appears to be near for ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (OO-goh CHAH-vehs.). Spanish newspaper ABC reports that the cancer riddling his body has entered its final stage. They say he_s on a potent cocktail of drugs, including an opiate that_s 100 times more powerful than morphine. Doctors say that the drugs are so strong that his body may not be able to tolerate them for much longer. They also don_t expected him to survive more than a few months. But Chavez hasn_t given up yet Eila. Late last week, he registered as a candidate for his third re-election. We_ll go now to Marina Valmont for the story. Vic, authorities in Colombia say that they_ve captured one of their most notorious crime bosses. Daniel El Loco Barrera is accused of being one of the country_s top drug lords, with ties to guerillas and other paramilitary groups. He was captured in Venezuela, and in a statement, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos thanked Venezuelan leader Ugo Chavez for his cooperation in Barrera_s apprehension. Washington led the operation Vic, and Britain_s MI-6 intelligence agency assisted as well.So what you_re saying is that the US and Venezuela actually cooperated on something?So it would seem. They may have political differences, but when it comes to taking down the bad guys, they see eye-to-eye.Let_s hope this is a beginning, thanks Marina.Myanmar_s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is visiting the US to receive one of America_s highest honors. She spent years under house arrest for her political activism and has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. It_s the US_s highest civilian honor. Past recipients include Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. Suu Kyi was awarded the medal in 2008, but hasn_t been able to collect it until now. Elsewhere on the world stage, a major American organization that provides aid to other countries has been kicked out of Russia. KC has been watching this story develop and joins us now with the latest, Kat? Vic, the United States Agency for International Development announced they were shutting down operations after an order from Russian authorities. Russia is accusing the agency - which has spent 3 billion dollars in 20 years on their mission - of influencing Russian politics. President Vladimir Putin has accused theUS-funded non-governmental organizations of planning protests against his re-election. One organization that exposed voter fraud in last year_s parliamentary elections was partially funded by the American agency. They have until October 1st to close up shop in Russia.Kat, what_s the reaction been like on Capitol Hill? They can_t be happy about this.The State Department says they_re still committed to promoting democracy and human rights in Russia, BUT they won_t comment further than that. EA) After two days of talks in Chicago, NATO leaders have given the green light for US President Barack Obama_s plan to withdraw foreign troops from Afghanistan by 2014. Obama says that the US cannot continue to wait for quote unquote perfect conditions in the war-torn region. According to the President, the Chicago conference helped create a road map for a unified exit from Afghanistan. SOUNDBITE-NATO troops will begin transferring duties over to Afghan forces in 2013, and will wind down the mission and pull out by the end of 2014. Some member countries will continue contributing funds to support the Afghan operation, which carries an annual operating price tag of 4 billion dollars.In other news, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has left Iran after talks that are being described as very promising. A tentative deal has been reached that will give nuclear investigators access to Iran_s secretive uranium enrichment program. Natasha Olenski has been tracking the talks and joins us now with the latest. Nat?NO) Eila, IAEA chief Yukiya Amano (you-KEE-ah ah-MAN-oh) says he expects the international watchdog agency to be given a chance to inspect Iran_s controversial nuclear facilities quite soon. Speaking from the agency_s headquarters in Vienna, Amano said the tentative agreement would allow investigators to determine whether Iran was pursuing a nuclear weapon once and for all. Specifics of the agreement have not yet been disclosed, but it_s believed inspectors will be given permission to visit Iranian nuclear sites, speak with nuclear scientists, and inspect previously sensitive documents. NO) Here_s something you probably wouldn_t have expected to be made in China. A US Senate committee report has concluded that a large number of counterfeit Chinese electrical parts are being used in American military equipment, including fighter jets, helicopters, and cargo planes. The year-long probe found more than 18-hundred cases of counterfeit goods being used in US aircraft. Nearly a million counterfeit parts were found in all, 70-percent of which could be traced back to China. The committee report criticizes China for failing to curb the counterfeit market. (EILA COMES ON IN SPLIT) EIla, it also concludes that the fake parts put US troops in danger and impose higher costs on the Pentagon. EA= North Am Set, side, long (facing EA) High end purses and movies are one thing Nat but parts for the military? That_s really scary. Is anything being done about this? NO) Well at the end of last year President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which is aimed at keeping counterfeit goods from entering the US. Natasha?NO) Youire absolutely right, Eila. Itis a truly sad day n weive lost one of the best.EA) He left behind a staggering body of work.NO) That he did. In fact in nearly 40 years on the program, he worked on around 800 investigative reports.EA) Mind boggling. What more can you tell us Vic?NO) Eila, the 93-year-old had been in declining health over the past few years, and underwent triple-bypass surgery in 2008. Prior to that, he was considered one of the most trusted names in journalism n and one of the most feared if you had something to hide. He was one of the original anchors on the groundbreaking news magazine show ì60 Minutesi. He remained a fixture until stepping down from a full-time position in 2006, although he continued to file the occasional report. Among his most memorable interviews were Martin Luther King, Yassar Arafat, and Iranis late Ayatollah Khomeni koh-MAY-nee). He will be missed.North Korea is continuing plans for its controversial rocket launch. The military has now moved the rocket into place. According to officials in Pyongyang (PYONG-YAHNG), the rocket will simply be launching a satellite into orbit. However, many feel that this is a disguised long-range missile test. And according to South Korean intelligence, it wonit end there. They suggest that theyill use the international uproar over the launch as an excuse to perform ANOTHER nuclear test. They claim to have satellite images that prove the North is preparing for a test at the same site where they carried out previous tests in 2006 and 2009.Things are not looking good for the proposed cease-fire in Syria. The rebels have rejected government demands for a written guarantee that they will disarm. The Free Syrian Army says that since they donit recognize the current government, they wouldnit give any such guarantee. This comes on the eve of a cease-fire brokered by the UN and Arab League. Now the Syrian military says they donit want the rebels to exploit their proposed troop withdrawal and re-organize. Back to you, Eila.EA) So Nat, when will we know if this proposal works or not.NO) Well, the cease-fire, if it DOES happen n is scheduled for Tuesday. But Iim not optimistic.EA) Itis a shame. So, enough sentimentality - we_ll do a little catching up in the close For now, let_s get down to what we do best n delivering the news Here_s VS with all the latest.Thanks Kat, and it_s great to have you back, you_ve never looked better Topping the news today, millions of people are bracing themselves in case Tropical Storm Isaac gets upgraded to a Hurricane and makes landfall. A state of emergency has been declared in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Residents in Louisiana have good reason to be concerned n meteorologists say that Isaac is following the same path that Hurricane Katrina did in 2005. Isaac_s lashing winds have already impacted Haiti and Cuba. As of now, thousands of Americans are being advised to leave their homes.Tropical Storm Isaac has already claimed one victim n the Republican National Convention in Tampa The first day of the 4-day event has been cancelled amid fears that Isaac will soon land in the area. As of now, organizers are scrambling to re-schedule 4 days of events into 3 days. One organizer says they haven_t ruled out the possibility of moving events to Friday. The vote to formally nominate Mitt Romney as the GOP_s presidential candidate is scheduled for Tuesday.Elsewhere on the international scene, an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale struck just off the coast of El Salvador. Initially the strength of the quake triggered tsunami warnings, but those were quickly cancelled. The epicenter of the tremor was located less than 80 miles south of the country. Fortunately there were no reports of injuries or damage. But it seemed like this weekend wasn_t good for the Earth_s tectonic plates. Dozens of smaller tremors also hit southern California, with minor damage reported in San Diego. We_ll be right back.

Our top story today comes out of the Middle East.The leader of Hezbollah has issued an ominous warning to the US should Israel launch an attack on Iran.Here_s the story.In an interview on Lebanese TV, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned that if Israel launches a strike on Iranian nuclear sites, the terrorist group will strike back with attacks on US bases in the Middle East. According to Nasrallah, if Israel targets Iran, America bears responsibility, whether the US is involved in the strike or not. Over the weekend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked world powers to set a quote clear red line to dissuade Iran from pursuing nuclear capabilities. That sparked fears of a possible strike from Israel before the upcoming US election. But despite the heightened rhetoric, Nasrallah said he doubts an attack will happen any time soon, mainly because of the economic impact a war in the Gulf would have on oil prices. In Thailand, one of the heirs to the Red Bull fortune was arrested on hit and run charges. Vorayuth Yoovidhya, the grandson of Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhya, allegedly hit a police officer with his Ferrari while speeding through the residential streets of Bangkok at dawn. The officer_s body and motorcycle were dragged a fair distance. Police traced oil streaks on the asphalt back to the family_s gated home in a wealthy district of Bangkok. Bangkok_s most senior police official is handling the case, but only after it was discovered that a lower-level officer had brought in a fake suspect in an attempted cover up.
