Each country has been asked to create a contingency plan in the event that Greece exits the single currency. In a document obtained by Reuters (ROY-turs), officials urge a quote unquote amiable divorce between Greece and the rest of the Euro zone countries, should the Greeks vote to shun harsh EU austerity measures and try their luck with their own currency. If they do leave, the EU and the IMF will consider giving them 60 billion dollars to help ease the transition. The second Greek election in two months is scheduled for June seventeenth. Staying in Europe, just days after NATO announced its European missile defense shield had achieved interim operational capability, Russia has raised eyebrows by unveiling a secretive new weapon designed specifically to penetrate the barrier. It_s a move that can only heighten tensions between Russia and the US. For a more detailed look at the developments, we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Vic, on Wednesday Russia successfully test-fired a missile, fitted with a dummy warhead, that traveled nearly 4-thousand miles It is an aggressive response to the US-led missile shield system in Europe, which NATO claims is being used to protect against attacks from rogue states such as Iran. However Russia is unhappy with the shield and says it changes the balance of military power in the region. Russia has already threatened to turn their missiles on European NATO sites.And Vic, the second named tropical storm of the East Pacific hurricane season is now a hurricane. Bud formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico early Thursday and is now considered a category 1 storm. It_s packing 90 mile per hour winds and is expected to grow much stronger over the next 24 hours. The National Hurricane Center in Miami expects Bud to then weaken as it approaches land late Friday. Back to you.VS) Bud sounds pretty harmless for now Eila, but with the hurricane season officially getting under way June 1, should we expect a lot more storms like this? EA) Actually, the concensus is NO. Forcasters are calling for a lighter then usual storm season with 12 named storms and 7 becoming hurricanes. VS) Forcasting is always a little murky but let_s hope they_re right. An international court in The Hague (HAY-g) handed down the sentence following last monthis conviction of Taylor for war crimes. The court found that he had aided rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone as they carried out a heinous campaign of terror.ES) In exchange for his help, Taylor received a ìsteady flowi of blood diamonds. The 64-year-old plans on appealing the 50-year sentence. Taylor says that he sees himself not as a war criminal, but a victim, and that he never stood a chance. Heis the first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes since World War 2.2. VS) Next up, a bizarre story is unfolding in Canada involving human remains. Police are looking for connections between several grisly discoveries. A package containing what seems to be a human foot was mailed to the offices of the ruling Conservative party in Ottawa. Meanwhile in Montreal, a janitor found human remains behind an apartment building n but not an entire body.ES) Police have also confirmed another body part was discovered at an Ottawa mail facility, but have remained tight-lipped on the details. Authorities say that itis too soon to link the incidents to each other. Ottawais major crimes unit is contacting other police departments for missing persons reports, or reports of similar crimes.3. VS) US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is stressing the importance of having a strong naval presence in Asia. Panetta made the remarks while speaking at the US naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland, just ahead of a visit to Asia for a security summit. He told the graduates that the US needs to strengthen ties with their allies in the region.ES) Panetta also mentioned China and their growing military, noting that America needs to be strong and vigilant in order to confront any challenge. However, he also said that they should be cooperating with China in order to ìshare security burdensi. Heill be traveling to China later this year for the first time as defense secretary.VS) Itis also important to keep a close eye on North Korea.ES) Very true. He was convicted in March of recruiting, conscripting, and using child soldiers as part of his militia in 2002 and 2003 during bloody conflicts in the Eastern Congo. Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year sentence for the 51-year-old warlord, but had said they_d settle for 20 if he offered a, quote, genuine apology.With pre-trial custody factored in, Lubanga will only spend another 8 years in prison. While he was actually given 3 sentences of between 12 and 14 years, he_ll serve them concurrently. Lubanga showed no emotion as the sentencing was handed down. Infighting between President Mohammed Morsi and the military may be putting Egypt_s democratic transition at risk. The newly-elected leader is locked in conflict with the nation_s powerful armed forces over whether the legislature should reconvene.A recent Supreme Court ruling helped bring Morsi into power on condition that the Egyptian parliament, which was dominated by his Muslim Brotherhood Party, be dissolved. The standoff caps nearly a year and a half of political strife that eventually resulted in the ousting of longtime leader Hosni Bubarak.Finance ministers in the Eurozone have agreed to let Spain borrow 37-billion dollars to help bail out their troubled banks. This would be the first installment of an earlier bailout agreement of up to 120-billion dollars that they_d already agreed upon last month. It_s not a done deal just yet though. The ministers have to get approval from their individual governments first. It_s still unknown exactly how much will be needed to rescue the Spanish banks. The ministers also agreed to extend a deadline for Spain to slash its budget deficit from 2013 to 2014. It_s another black eye for education in America as 30,000 Chicago teachers have gone on strike. Their union had negotiated with school officials for 10 months, but they weren_t able to come to an agreement. This is Chicago_s first teacher strike in 25 years. As a result, police are beefing up their operations as 400-thousand students have nowhere to go. Some schools and community organizations are opening the doors in order to provide some kind of relief for frazzled parents.Three separate polls after the Democratic National Convention show that President Obama_s popularity has risen slightly since the big event. According to a Rasmussen poll, Obama has a 2 point lead over Mitt Romney n 46 to 44 percent. That same poll had Romney with a 3 point lead just last week. However, experts warn that Obama shouldn_t start doing victory laps just yet. History has shown that post-convention bumps almost always vanish, meaning that this remains anybody_s race. And the Obama campaign got even more positive news. For the first time in months, they_ve managed to raise more money than the Republicans. According to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, in August they managed to collect 114 million dollars, versus 111 million for the Romney camp. Over a million people donated to the re-election campaign last month alone. In a sign of grass-roots support for the President, 98-percent of those donations were under 250 dollars, with an average of 58 dollars each. We_ll be right back.

Details on a confidential UN report concerning the situation in Syria have gone public.ES) And the document claims that the Syrian government has been getting help from another not-so-popular player on the global scene.VS) Here_s the story. 1. VS) A new report from the UN points the finger at Iran for exporting weapons to the Syrian government, a clear violation of a ban on weapon sales. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a diplomat with knowledge of the as-yet unreleased report told reporters that three shipments of Iranian weapons - two of which bound for Syria - had been intercepted.ES) The report will be submitted to and reviewed by the United Nations Security Council, and could lead to further sanctions against Iran. Despite four rounds of sanctions since 2006, the rogue state has continued with its uranium enrichment program, maintaining that its aimed only at producing nuclear energy and not weaponry.2. VS) Meanwhile in the Hague, the long-awaited trial of alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic (RAT-ko MLAD-itch) has come to a screeching halt after just two days. The presiding judge has delayed the case because of quote significant disclosure errors by prosecutors, who failed to provide all of their evidence to Mladic_s defense team.ES) Mladic_s attorneys have requested a six-month delay, but the judge aims to have a new starting date as soon as possible. The 70-year old former general of the Bosnian Serb army stands accused of leading Europe_s worst massacre since the Second World War. 3. VS) The April fundraising tally is out, and the Obama campaign along with the democratic party, managed to raise a hefty 43.6 million dollars. Although somewhat surprisingly, that number is down nearly 10 million from the previous month. ES) Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has some reasons to celebrate of his own. The presumed Republican candidate pulled in a healthy 40 million dollars last month - over three times the amount raised in March. That figure includes money generated for Romney_s 2012 campaign, as well as the _Romney Victory Fund,_ which is a joint fundraising effort with the Republican National Committee. The nations that make up the Euro zone are bracing for the worst. Each country has been asked to create a contingency plan in the event that Greece exits the single currency. In a document obtained by Reuters (ROY-turs), officials urge a quote unquote amiable divorce between Greece and the rest of the Euro zone countries, should the Greeks vote to shun harsh EU austerity measures and try their luck with their own currency. If they do leave, the EU and the IMF will consider giving them 60 billion dollars to help ease the transition. The second Greek election in two months is scheduled for June seventeenth. Staying in Europe, just days after NATO announced its European missile defense shield had achieved interim operational capability, Russia has raised eyebrows by unveiling a secretive new weapon designed specifically to penetrate the barrier. It_s a move that can only heighten tensions between Russia and the US. For a more detailed look at the developments, we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Vic, on Wednesday Russia successfully test-fired a missile, fitted with a dummy warhead, that traveled nearly 4-thousand miles It is an aggressive response to the US-led missile shield system in Europe, which NATO claims is being used to protect against attacks from rogue states such as Iran. However Russia is unhappy with the shield and says it changes the balance of military power in the region. Russia has already threatened to turn their missiles on European NATO sites.And Vic, the second named tropical storm of the East Pacific hurricane season is now a hurricane. Bud formed off the southwestern coast of Mexico early Thursday and is now considered a category 1 storm. It_s packing 90 mile per hour winds and is expected to grow much stronger over the next 24 hours. The National Hurricane Center in Miami expects Bud to then weaken as it approaches land late Friday. Back to you.VS) Bud sounds pretty harmless for now Eila, but with the hurricane season officially getting under way June 1, should we expect a lot more storms like this? EA) Actually, the concensus is NO. Forcasters are calling for a lighter then usual storm season with 12 named storms and 7 becoming hurricanes. VS) US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is stressing the importance of having a strong naval presence in Asia. Panetta made the remarks while speaking at the US naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland, just ahead of a visit to Asia for a security summit. He told the graduates that the US needs to strengthen ties with their allies in the region.ES) Panetta also mentioned China and their growing military, noting that America needs to be strong and vigilant in order to confront any challenge. Prosecutors had been asking for a 30-year sentence for the 51-year-old warlord, but had said they_d settle for 20 if he offered a, quote, genuine apology.With pre-trial custody factored in, Lubanga will only spend another 8 years in prison. While he was actually given 3 sentences of between 12 and 14 years, he_ll serve them concurrently. Lubanga showed no emotion as the sentencing was handed down. Infighting between President Mohammed Morsi and the military may be putting Egypt_s democratic transition at risk. The newly-elected leader is locked in conflict with the nation_s powerful armed forces over whether the legislature should reconvene.A recent Supreme Court ruling helped bring Morsi into power on condition that the Egyptian parliament, which was dominated by his Muslim Brotherhood Party, be dissolved. The standoff caps nearly a year and a half of political strife that eventually resulted in the ousting of longtime leader Hosni Bubarak.Finance ministers in the Eurozone have agreed to let Spain borrow 37-billion dollars to help bail out their troubled banks. This would be the first installment of an earlier bailout agreement of up to 120-billion dollars that they_d already agreed upon last month. It_s not a done deal just yet though. The ministers have to get approval from their individual governments first. It_s still unknown exactly how much will be needed to rescue the Spanish banks. The ministers also agreed to extend a deadline for Spain to slash its budget deficit from 2013 to 2014. Their union had negotiated with school officials for 10 months, but they weren_t able to come to an agreement. This is Chicago_s first teacher strike in 25 years. As a result, police are beefing up their operations as 400-thousand students have nowhere to go. Some schools and community organizations are opening the doors in order to provide some kind of relief for frazzled parents.Three separate polls after the Democratic National Convention show that President Obama_s popularity has risen slightly since the big event. According to a Rasmussen poll, Obama has a 2 point lead over Mitt Romney n 46 to 44 percent. That same poll had Romney with a 3 point lead just last week. However, experts warn that Obama shouldn_t start doing victory laps just yet. History has shown that post-convention bumps almost always vanish, meaning that this remains anybody_s race. And the Obama campaign got even more positive news. For the first time in months, they_ve managed to raise more money than the Republicans. According to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, in August they managed to collect 114 million dollars, versus 111 million for the Romney camp. Over a million people donated to the re-election campaign last month alone. VS) A new report from the UN points the finger at Iran for exporting weapons to the Syrian government, a clear violation of a ban on weapon sales. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a diplomat with knowledge of the as-yet unreleased report told reporters that three shipments of Iranian weapons - two of which bound for Syria - had been intercepted.ES) The report will be submitted to and reviewed by the United Nations Security Council, and could lead to further sanctions against Iran.
