Republicans have much to be happy about. Although it wasn_t a trouncing, Mitt Romney came out ahead, with most polls declaring him the winner over President Obama. Analysts credit the former Massachusetts governor with being clear and confident on several issues, from health care reform to the economy. Although President Obama made no significant gaffes, his performance was criticized as being cautious and tentative. Others cited him as being high on policy figures, low on emotion, and at times, too defensive. Score one for Governor Romney. Next up? Joe Biden and Paul Ryan will debate in Kentucky on October 11th. Jim Lehrer may be the undisputed king of presidential debate moderators, but he was definitely off his game Wednesday night. Critics from both ends of the political spectrum are blasting the veteran PBS newsman for the passive role he took in the RomneyObama match-up. The biggest complaints? Lehrer_s questions were often vague, he didn_t challenge facts, and he repeatedly allowed both candidates to take control of the debate. This passive role was particularly surprising given his high-profile stature. Lehrer has moderated an impressive one third of all televised US presidential debates. In other news, for the second day in a row, Turkey has been firing artillery across the border into Syria. This is in retaliation to shelling from Syria. It could escalate - Turkey_s parliament has okayed sending troops across the border. The UN Security Council is convening to discuss the situation, after Turkey requested that they intervene to prevent further Syrian aggression. International response has been largely united - the US, UK, EU, and France have all condemned Syria_s cross-border attacks. We_ll take a quick break and see you shortly for more NAKED, news.

They_re leading us off with the fall out to a suspected INSIDER attack on American troops in Afghanistan. What_s the latest Vic. Natasha, the majority of joint US-Afghan military operations have been suspended indefinitely. This follows Sunday_s attack, which killed four US troops. Officials think it was an inside job. They say 51 NATO soldiers have been killed in what they refer to as blue-on-green attacks, this year alone. A senior official says the US can no longer trust Afghan personnel.Vic, according to sources close to the situation, the suspension could last for three days or three months. Last May, the US announced that 23-thousand troops would be pulled out of Afghanistan by the end of summer, leaving full responsibility to Afghan troops by the end of 2014. Whether or not these new strains on the relationship affects that process remains to be seen. A massive manhunt is currently underway in Mexico for over 130 inmates who escaped from prison through a large tunnel near the country_s shared border with the US. Prisoners started the tunnel in the jail_s carpentry workshop, and then cut through the perimeter fence. Texas border guards have been put on alert in case any of the fugitives try to flee to the US.Mexican officials say the tunnel was over 4 feet wide and 23 feet long. There are also suspicions that corrupt jail guards helped spring the prisoners loose. Many of those on the lam have ties to the country_s notoriously drug cartels. The state government is offering a reward of over 15-thousand dollars for information leading to the arrest of each convict. Microsoft has released an urgent warning to Internet Explorer browser users. They_re urging them to download a security patch to protect from a dangerous new bug. A security flaw in Explorer_s software has been exposed that can allow hackers to remotely control infected PC_s. The free security software can be downloaded from Microsoft_s website, and is called the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. The company says it should protect users until an updated version of Internet Explorer is released. I_ll just say that I_m glad I switched over to Google Chrome a few months ago. Police officials say that the suspect had allegedly rigged his small apartment with at least 30 home-made grenades and 10 gallons of gas. The bomb squad needed to remotely disarm the traps, which were apparently designed to go off when anyone entered. One official says the entire apartment building would have been engulfed in flames by the time fire trucks arrived. On the political front, the vitriolic ads on both sides of the US Presidential election are taking a clear toll on the candidates. According to a poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal, both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have seen their very negative ratings hit record highs. And Romney has a net rating of negative, which hasn_t happened with any other Republican candidate in recent history. Overall, Obama is inching ahead amongst registered voters n polling at a 6-percent lead over Romney, up 3-percent from last month. But the majority of those polled still say they think less of BOTH candidates after what they_ve seen and heard recently. Good luck, gentlemen. North of the border, Canada is experiencing it_s lowest crime rate since 1972. According to stats from 2011, there were just under 2 million crimes reported. That_s a drop, nationwide, of 6-percent, from the year before. Official numbers say that crime peaked in Canada in 1991, but has been decreasing ever since. While weire only seeing some of them, officials have called the seizure a treasure trove of material. In France, the upcoming run-off election between President Nicolas Sarkozy (nee-koh-LAH sahr-koh-ZEE) and opponent Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH oh-LAHN-(deh)) is getting ugly They didnit pull any punches during their debate on Wednesday, with each candidate accusing the other of lying. This was the only televised debate between the two leading up to this weekendis run-off vote. Analysts said that despite the aggressive arguing, neither candidate really trumped the other. Critics from both ends of the political spectrum are blasting the veteran PBS newsman for the passive role he took in the RomneyObama match-up. The biggest complaints? Lehrer_s questions were often vague, he didn_t challenge facts, and he repeatedly allowed both candidates to take control of the debate. This passive role was particularly surprising given his high-profile stature. Lehrer has moderated an impressive one third of all televised US presidential debates. In other news, for the second day in a row, Turkey has been firing artillery across the border into Syria. This is in retaliation to shelling from Syria. It could escalate - Turkey_s parliament has okayed sending troops across the border. The UN Security Council is convening to discuss the situation, after Turkey requested that they intervene to prevent further Syrian aggression. Natasha, the majority of joint US-Afghan military operations have been suspended indefinitely. This follows Sunday_s attack, which killed four US troops. Officials think it was an inside job. They say 51 NATO soldiers have been killed in what they refer to as blue-on-green attacks, this year alone. A senior official says the US can no longer trust Afghan personnel.Vic, according to sources close to the situation, the suspension could last for three days or three months. Last May, the US announced that 23-thousand troops would be pulled out of Afghanistan by the end of summer, leaving full responsibility to Afghan troops by the end of 2014. Whether or not these new strains on the relationship affects that process remains to be seen. A massive manhunt is currently underway in Mexico for over 130 inmates who escaped from prison through a large tunnel near the country_s shared border with the US. Prisoners started the tunnel in the jail_s carpentry workshop, and then cut through the perimeter fence. Texas border guards have been put on alert in case any of the fugitives try to flee to the US.Mexican officials say the tunnel was over 4 feet wide and 23 feet long. There are also suspicions that corrupt jail guards helped spring the prisoners loose. Many of those on the lam have ties to the country_s notoriously drug cartels. The state government is offering a reward of over 15-thousand dollars for information leading to the arrest of each convict. Microsoft has released an urgent warning to Internet Explorer browser users. They_re urging them to download a security patch to protect from a dangerous new bug. A security flaw in Explorer_s software has been exposed that can allow hackers to remotely control infected PC_s. The free security software can be downloaded from Microsoft_s website, and is called the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. The company says it should protect users until an updated version of Internet Explorer is released. I_ll just say that I_m glad I switched over to Google Chrome a few months ago. According to a poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal, both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have seen their very negative ratings hit record highs.
