Making headlines today, American health officials say the current outbreak of the West Nile Virus is one of the worst on record According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been over 11-hundred cases reported so far this year. The norm is under 300. 41 fatalities have been reported with half of them in Texas. It_s gotten so bad in Dallas that aerial insecticide spraying has begun. West Nile is spread to humans via mosquitoes who have previously bitten infected birds. It should be noted that only 20 percent of people infected with the virus get sick, and only 1 in 150 develop serious symptoms.Elsewhere in the world, more and more countries are sounding off on what they should do about the situation in Syria. Even if it means ruffeling the feathers of 2 superpowers who seem to have Syria_s back. For more on this story I_ll send you over to Rachelle Wilde with a naked news bulletin. Vic, the UK is the latest country to warn Syria against using chemical and biological weapons against rebel forces. Syria has hinted that they have the weapons and are not afraid to use them. But after talking with US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has warned Syria to revisit their approach. Cameron has also discussed the issue with French President Francois.The three leaders have reportedly discussed ways to support the Syrian rebels, as well as ways to assist a transitional government after what they call the inevitable fall of Bashar al-Assad_s regime. But the concern isn_t universal - China is accusing Obama of using the chemical weapons issue as an excuse to intervene with military forces. Russia has voiced opposition to intervention as well. Vic, both Russia AND China have also blocked attempts by the UN to impose serious sanctions on Syria.That_s not really a surprise though, is it?Not at all. Neither China nor Russia have the best track record when it comes to human rights.Exactly, and unfortunately that_s not changing anytime soon. thanks for the story Rachelle. In other news, Wildfires continue to wreak havoc in the US, particularly in California. A 33-square-mile blaze in Northern California has destroyed at least 50 buildings near the town of Manton. The fire - which was sparked by a lightning strike - continues to threaten hundreds of homes in the region. California Governor Jerry Brown has called in the National Guard to help the 2000 firefighters battling the blaze - nicknamed the Ponderosa Fire. Despite their best efforts, officials expect the wildfire will claim many more buildings before it_s contained. The Ponderosa Fire is just one of at least 36 major fires tearing through the western United States. We_ll be right back.

Our top story today takes us to Naples (NAY-puhls) Italy, where police have seized over 1-point-3 billion dollars in mafia assets belonging to the Camorra crime syndicate. The assets include real state, cars, bank accounts, and stock holdings. But most shocking of all is the fact that sixteen judges have been arrested for alleged collaboration with the crime family. The judges are suspected of taking bribes in exchange for financial rulings in favour of the Camorra, and one is believed to have worked as an accountant for them. So far authorities have not released any names, but 47 people have been arrested in all. Elsewhere, the international community is holding its breath with the news that a Russian oil tanker has arrived carrying a special anti-terror squad to Syria. As we well know, Syrian President Bashar al Assad has long referred to the public uprising there as a terrorist insurgency. The United Nations Security Council calls the troops_ arrival a bomb that could have devastating consequences. To learn more we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Natasha, although Moscow has declined comment on the marines_ arrival in the port of Tartus, their presence is being interpreted as an obvious show of support for the current Syrian regime. Russia_s defense minister has denied that the troops are part of a special operations group, and instead says they are military and technical advisors. Russia has backed Kofi Annan_s (AN-an) latest UN resolution to settle the crisis. But having Russian boots on the ground in Syria makes the prospect of an armed UN intervention a very volatile proposition. EA) Further east now to Iraq, where a series of coordinated car bomb attacks in several cities marked the ninth anniversary of the invasion of US troops. 39 people were killed and 200 others suffered injuries. Authorities say the blasts were aimed at disrupting a critical upcoming Arab League Summit being held in Baghdad at the end of the month. The meeting was supposed to be held in Baghdad last year but was cancelled due to security concerns. Officials are undeterred, but also say they expect more attacks as journalists and delegates arrive in the coming days Natasha.NO) With all the commotion going on over there Eila you couldn_t blame anyone if they were to cancel.EA) Of course not. And is it just me or is it hard to believe that it_s already been nine years since American troops first landed there? NO) Time flies doesn_t it? And the situation is still as volatile as ever.EA) The more things change the more they stay the same.NO) Indeed. That_s right but whether it_s a step in the RIGHT direction is a whole other question. Here_s senior anchor Victoria Sinclair to explain in your NEWS OFF THE TOP Thanks ladies. In an effort to catch up with the modern world, Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a female-only city. This would be where career-minded women can climb the corporate ladder without violating strict Islamic laws. A municipality in the Eastern city of Hafuf is being given 130 million dollars in investments to get things rolling. Their estimating that 5-thousand jobs will be created with females runing companies, managing and as well as being employed on production lines. As of right now women aren_t BANNED from the workplace, but only 15 percent of them have jobs. A group of Missouri women are suing their plastic surgeon for posting before and after photos of their breast enhancement procedures on her website... WITH their names attached Some forty patients have complained about the website of Dr. Michele Koo, and a group of them are suing the surgeon for negligence. The problem was only noticed after the topless pics began surfacing in Google searches of their names. Hey, it_s never bothered ME. And a group of unhappy American shoppers have started a Facebook page to rail against a so-called invasion of Canadian bargain hunters Because groceries are so much cheaper across the border, shoppers from Vancouver Canada head south to the Costco in Bellingham Washington. The influx of extra shoppers has resulted in longer lines.Unhappy US citizens behind the Facebook page are demanding that Costco introduce American-only hours, and say the Canadian shoppers are rude. The page was picked up by Canadian media, and once word got out it resulted in ugly mudslinging from both sides. Our top story today takes us back to Syria, where tensions between the beleaguered country and Turkey are on the rise.ES) The Turkish government is outraged by the downing of one of its warplanes by Syrian forces last week, and on Tuesday the Turkish military made a dramatic change to its rules of engagement.VS) Here_s the latest.1. VS) Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (reh-JEHP t-eye-YIHP ERR-doh-ahn) has issued a stern warning to Syrian forces operating near the Turkish-Syrian border. The country has altered its rules of engagement and will now treat any action by Syrian forces near the border as a potential military threat.ES) Erdogan harshly criticized Syria for shooting down the aircraft. According to the PM, the Turkish plane clearly posed no threat, and even if it did cross into Syrian airspace for a few seconds, there was no reason for Syria to attack. Meanwhile Turkey_s NATO allies have condemned the strike in the strongest possible terms, and are urging Syria to avoid similar incidents in the future.2. VS) Residents of the sunshine state will be getting everything BUT over the next couple of days. Weather experts say that Florida will get between 4 and 8 inches of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Tropical Storm Debby crawls across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm has already flooded streets and ruined houses along the Florida panhandle. ES) As of Tuesday morning, the storm was centered some 85 miles from Cedar Key, Florida. The National Hurricane Center says that certain parts of the state could see as much as 25 inches of rain. Debby is packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and has the potential to create a few tornadoes on her way across the state. 3. VS) In Washington, the US Supreme Court has shot down an appeal for it to re-assess its contentious Citizens United decision. The Court voted 5-4 against a review of whether individual states could limit corporate contributions of political campaigns. The case revolved around the state of Montana specifically, but had nationwide implications.ES) The 2010 Citizens United decision paved the way for the super PACs and massive corporate spending seen in recent election campaigns. According to the court, corporations have the same rights and freedoms as wealthy Americans, and should not be restricted in their support of political candidates. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled against a review, it is unlikely that the law will be repealed any time in the near future. A lot of mixed opinions about this one Vic.VS) That_s for sure. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the court had turned a blind eye to special interest money and political corruption.ES) And Republican leader Mitch McConnell called it an important victory for freedom of speech. He recently barreled down the side of a Columbian mountain - 6000 feet, and 1000 steps - on a BIKE. Wanna see what HE saw?I hope he had a nice padded seat, otherwise his junk just took a POUNDING.There_s always some guy at the pub hogging the pool table, claiming he can do trick shots. Well, the next time you see that guy, tell him he_s nothing compared to these next guys. Okay, I need some volunteers to help me practice some amazing DARTS trick shots. (pause) Really? It should be noted that only 20 percent of people infected with the virus get sick, and only 1 in 150 develop serious symptoms.Elsewhere in the world, more and more countries are sounding off on what they should do about the situation in Syria. Vic, the UK is the latest country to warn Syria against using chemical and biological weapons against rebel forces. Syria has hinted that they have the weapons and are not afraid to use them. But after talking with US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has warned Syria to revisit their approach. Cameron has also discussed the issue with French President Francois.The three leaders have reportedly discussed ways to support the Syrian rebels, as well as ways to assist a transitional government after what they call the inevitable fall of Bashar al-Assad_s regime. But the concern isn_t universal - China is accusing Obama of using the chemical weapons issue as an excuse to intervene with military forces. Russia has voiced opposition to intervention as well. Vic, both Russia AND China have also blocked attempts by the UN to impose serious sanctions on Syria.That_s not really a surprise though, is it?Not at all. In other news, Wildfires continue to wreak havoc in the US, particularly in California. A 33-square-mile blaze in Northern California has destroyed at least 50 buildings near the town of Manton. The fire - which was sparked by a lightning strike - continues to threaten hundreds of homes in the region. California Governor Jerry Brown has called in the National Guard to help the 2000 firefighters battling the blaze - nicknamed the Ponderosa Fire. Despite their best efforts, officials expect the wildfire will claim many more buildings before it_s contained. The Ponderosa Fire is just one of at least 36 major fires tearing through the western United States. We_ll be right back. Our top story today takes us to Naples (NAY-puhls) Italy, where police have seized over 1-point-3 billion dollars in mafia assets belonging to the Camorra crime syndicate. The assets include real state, cars, bank accounts, and stock holdings. But most shocking of all is the fact that sixteen judges have been arrested for alleged collaboration with the crime family. The judges are suspected of taking bribes in exchange for financial rulings in favour of the Camorra, and one is believed to have worked as an accountant for them. So far authorities have not released any names, but 47 people have been arrested in all. Elsewhere, the international community is holding its breath with the news that a Russian oil tanker has arrived carrying a special anti-terror squad to Syria. As we well know, Syrian President Bashar al Assad has long referred to the public uprising there as a terrorist insurgency. The United Nations Security Council calls the troops_ arrival a bomb that could have devastating consequences. To learn more we_ll turn things over to Eila Adams. EA) Natasha, although Moscow has declined comment on the marines_ arrival in the port of Tartus, their presence is being interpreted as an obvious show of support for the current Syrian regime. Russia_s defense minister has denied that the troops are part of a special operations group, and instead says they are military and technical advisors. Russia has backed Kofi Annan_s (AN-an) latest UN resolution to settle the crisis. But having Russian boots on the ground in Syria makes the prospect of an armed UN intervention a very volatile proposition. EA) Further east now to Iraq, where a series of coordinated car bomb attacks in several cities marked the ninth anniversary of the invasion of US troops. 39 people were killed and 200 others suffered injuries. Authorities say the blasts were aimed at disrupting a critical upcoming Arab League Summit being held in Baghdad at the end of the month. The meeting was supposed to be held in Baghdad last year but was cancelled due to security concerns. Officials are undeterred, but also say they expect more attacks as journalists and delegates arrive in the coming days Natasha.NO) With all the commotion going on over there Eila you couldn_t blame anyone if they were to cancel.EA) Of course not. Their estimating that 5-thousand jobs will be created with females runing companies, managing and as well as being employed on production lines. As of right now women aren_t BANNED from the workplace, but only 15 percent of them have jobs. A group of Missouri women are suing their plastic surgeon for posting before and after photos of their breast enhancement procedures on her website... WITH their names attached Some forty patients have complained about the website of Dr. Michele Koo, and a group of them are suing the surgeon for negligence. And a group of unhappy American shoppers have started a Facebook page to rail against a so-called invasion of Canadian bargain hunters Because groceries are so much cheaper across the border, shoppers from Vancouver Canada head south to the Costco in Bellingham Washington. The influx of extra shoppers has resulted in longer lines.Unhappy US citizens behind the Facebook page are demanding that Costco introduce American-only hours, and say the Canadian shoppers are rude. VS) Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (reh-JEHP t-eye-YIHP ERR-doh-ahn) has issued a stern warning to Syrian forces operating near the Turkish-Syrian border. The country has altered its rules of engagement and will now treat any action by Syrian forces near the border as a potential military threat.ES) Erdogan harshly criticized Syria for shooting down the aircraft. According to the PM, the Turkish plane clearly posed no threat, and even if it did cross into Syrian airspace for a few seconds, there was no reason for Syria to attack. Meanwhile Turkey_s NATO allies have condemned the strike in the strongest possible terms, and are urging Syria to avoid similar incidents in the future.2. VS) Residents of the sunshine state will be getting everything BUT over the next couple of days. Weather experts say that Florida will get between 4 and 8 inches of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Tropical Storm Debby crawls across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm has already flooded streets and ruined houses along the Florida panhandle. ES) As of Tuesday morning, the storm was centered some 85 miles from Cedar Key, Florida. The National Hurricane Center says that certain parts of the state could see as much as 25 inches of rain. Debby is packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, and has the potential to create a few tornadoes on her way across the state. 3. VS) In Washington, the US Supreme Court has shot down an appeal for it to re-assess its contentious Citizens United decision. The Court voted 5-4 against a review of whether individual states could limit corporate contributions of political campaigns. The case revolved around the state of Montana specifically, but had nationwide implications.ES) The 2010 Citizens United decision paved the way for the super PACs and massive corporate spending seen in recent election campaigns. According to the court, corporations have the same rights and freedoms as wealthy Americans, and should not be restricted in their support of political candidates. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled against a review, it is unlikely that the law will be repealed any time in the near future. A lot of mixed opinions about this one Vic.VS) That_s for sure. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the court had turned a blind eye to special interest money and political corruption.ES) And Republican leader Mitch McConnell called it an important victory for freedom of speech.
